What is Middle School?Middle school is a bridge between elementary school and high school. The middle school environment offers a unique opportunity for children to develop positive identities as citizens and life-long learners while preparing for the rigors of high school. The middle school concept was embraced by Oak Park as an alternative to the junior high model which is department driven and functions as a "mini" high school. This decision to focus on middle schools came out of the sense that middle school age children are different from high school students in terms of their emotional and social needs, their understanding of the world and relationships, their need for a safe community, and their tendency to develop at varying rates. The middle school addresses the unique needs of middle school students by being organized around heterogeneous teams of students working together with a small multidisciplinary team of teachers that cover all the core subject areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies). Heterogeneous grouping provides an enriched environment for a diverse, positive student culture that embraces the uniqueness of each individual student. These teams provide students with a small, supportive environment for social, emotional, and academic development. The team strengthens the middle school experience through collaboration and collective expertise provided in part by common planning times. A variety of differentiation strategies accommodates the individual needs of students. An integral part of the middle school concept is the advisory class which occurs two days of the week. The advisory class is a smaller group of students within the team and is designed to provide a balance between the academic demands and other developmental needs. Advisory supports the 6th grade students as they adjust to the middle school culture, helps the 8th grade students prepare for high school, and provides a small group setting to address the issues and needs specific to middle school age students. |
