About Mr. Shannon

School year 2012-2013 marks my 13th year teaching in District 97 and my 23rd year of public school music teaching.

My education includes a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University, Chicago with a music education major and a Master of   Music Education from VanderCook College of Music, Chicago with an emphasis in string pedagogy.

I have taught previously in South Berwyn district #100 and Mt. Prospect district #57.

I have also been an instructor of saxophone at Concordia University, River Forest and VanderCook.

I have had a concurrent 30 plus year career as a performer, mainly as a theater orchestra musician playing flutes, clarinets and saxophones. You may have heard me at the Chicago, Oriental (Ford Center), Shubert (Bank of America), Auditorium, Shakespeare, Goodman, Steppenwolf, Drury Lane, Lincolnshire or Candlelight Theaters playing for shows like Joseph, Phantom, Showboat, Chorus Line, Cats, Annie, Billy Elliott and many others. I have also played behind performers such as the Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Bernadette Peters, Red Skelton and Michael Feinstein. Since dedicating myself to full time    teaching 18 years ago I work occasionally as an orchestra substitute. Last spring I performed with the City Lights Orchestra at functions featuring Cardinal Francis George and former president Bill Clinton!
I played evenings and weekends for Annie at the Paramount Theater in Aurora over the holidays.

I was born in Oak Park and have lived here all but 2 years of my adult life after growing up in Carol Stream and Wheaton. I am married to Mrs Shannon who teaches orchestra and general music in District 97. We have 2 young boys, Corry 7 and  Walter 5 and a Golden Retriever named Ginger. Last summer we moved into a house in Oak Park near Hatch school with my parents. We are all very excited!
