4th Grade Art Curriculum

Creative Process

By fourth grade when students have art for 67 minutes per week, they are able to demonstrate an understanding of detail drawing and drawing refinement. They explore, in more advanced methods, the areas of painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, weaving & textiles, lettering and design. In ceramics they often use a combination of building methods. They hear and recognize the vocabulary in the Elements of Art, which was introduced in the lower primary grades. They also begin to use the Principles of Design, which aid them in the composition of a project. Themes in the fourth grade art curriculum directly link to the multicultural aspects of study they meet in their core classes. A special mention is made of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose house and studio is in the village of Oak Park. Knowledge of other major artists’ works are subtly interwoven into the fourth grade art curriculum depending on the decision of the instructor and the events happening in the Chicago area.
