5th Grade Art Curriculum

Creative Process

Fifth graders meet with the art teacher for 67 minutes per week. At this stage of development in our program, students draw and paint using a variety of materials such as pen/ink, tempera, watercolors and acrylic paints. They continue the study of color, the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Printmaking, pottery, fiber arts, advanced sculptural techniques, and clay used as sculpture, all become more involved. Students are challenged based on their experiences in previous grades and dependent on the needs of the individual student. Use of an art vocabulary is encouraged and the students are exposed to the “art critique”, during which they positively evaluate the work of their peers in open discussion. As fifth graders study core class topics as “America”, themes such as Native American art (i.e., pottery, weaving and jewelry) may be introduced. Studying the artists of America fits especially well in the fifth grade curriculum.
