3rd Grade Art Curriculum

Creative Process

Third graders meet in the art room for 67 minutes a week. It is in third grade that students draw and paint with a focus on more detailed shapes. Overlapping and placement of figure and ground, two basics of composition, are introduced. Longrange units in painting start, as well as an exploration in new techniques of printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and weaving. Clay construction continues with projects using the slab or coil methods of building. Careers in art are discussed, possibly in correlation with ongoing projects so the student learns about the cartoonist, printmaker, painter, sculptor, glassblower, and others, and can see the relationship between these artists and their own community.
