In the End, You Are Happy

Joseph (Tad) H

The captain’s voice filtered through the intercom. “Time for lift off!” We sped forward as we heard a roaring noise. Our ears started to pop. It seemed like the volume around us was getting lower. As we flew up into the air, a baby started to cry when his ears popped.

Do you know the times when you’re sitting in an airplane and you’re trying to read, but there is too much noise? The only thing you can do is try to go to sleep. So, I fell into an uneasy sleep. Suddenly, we jumped as we hit the ground and came in for a landing. As I saw what happened I yelled, “Touchdown!”

We got our luggage and went to get our rented car. It was a big black car and it smelled like perfume. It made me dizzy, but I did not faint. We got into the car and started driving for what seemed like forever. Finally, I saw my grandparent’s black and white house. We walked up to the front door, rang the doorbell, and my grandma came. We hugged her and then went to see my grandpa.

He was lying in bed. It seemed like he was in a trance. Grandpa’s eyes were open but they rolled up and back. He couldn’t talk, but every once in awhile he moaned. Grandpa knew it was us because of our voices. We told him that we loved him.

As we were leaving to go to my cousin’s house the next morning, I peeked into my grandpa’s door and saw him lying in the bed. Next to him was Aunt Ann, my dad’s youngest sister, and Aunt Mary, his other sister. At that point, I didn’t know that my grandpa was going to die.

At six in the morning, my brother and one of my cousins came into my room and woke me up. I fell back to sleep and didn’t wake up until eight. When I went downstairs, they got mad at me for not coming down earlier. I was just about to turn on the Gamecube when Aunt Jen and my mom came in to tell us that our grandpa had died.

On the plane ride going home, I saw a cloud that looked like my grandpa. I knew he had gone to another place and I knew he had no worries. And I smiled.
