Sick in Bed
(A novel)
Prologue
Last
Veterans Day; I went to see my beloved, Korean-War-Veteran, sick grandfather! Unfortunately,
he has a rare form of blood cancer. I spent almost two hours greeting
him, watching movies with him and eating lunch with my grandfather. Now
I will tell you about last week’s visit with the old soldier.
Chapter 1: Disease
My
grandfather has a rare kind of blood cancer. It is started when certain
cells turn white cells into “hairy” cells. These “hairy
cells continue to change white cells into “hairies.” My
grandfather is in the hospital to get rid of his “hairy” and
white cells. The doctors do this by putting a clear liquid into a
tube, drop by drop, into his arm. When all the “hairy” cells
are killed by the liquidized ally, more white blood cells can grow. That’s
how my grandfather’s disease works and how it can be cured. As
the saying goes, “you can’t fight a war without any soldiers,” and
white cells are the soldier cells.
Chapter 2: A visit in General
On
to the point. On Veteran’s Day, my brothers, our sitter and
I visited our (at least my) grandfather. We walked through an anti-germ
door. Then, we went to his room, walked straight in and saw him watching “Monty
Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail.” We greeted him; he
greeted us. Next we watched the rest of Monty Python. After
that, we went to the hospital cafeteria. We ate in my grandfather’s
room while watching some Charlie Chaplin shorts. After some two hours
with him, we left our “Pop pop” to his day.
Epilogue
In
conclusion, my brothers, caretaker and I went to visit my Grandfather at
Northwestern Hospital. I learned a great deal about his disease. Also,
we spent two hours-ish having a great time with the aged soldier.
