How the Sun Came
A long time ago, the world was dark and cold
with only two pale moons in the sky. Everyone was unhappy. Children didn’t play,
women didn’t sew and men didn’t farm.
One
day, a few villagers decided to go to Tarintina, the goddess of the sky. They
wanted to request that she put something in the sky to keep them warm
and happy.
When they arrived, they
all knelt at Tarintina’s feet. “What do you desire?” she
asked. “Oh wise and good Tarintina of the sky, we would love
a ball of fire in our lives to keep us happy,” said a man named Roberto. “Is
that all?” said Tarintina? “Yes, your honor,” said another
man called Barbetro. “I will try my best,” answered Tarintina.
The villagers left.
For many nights, Tarintina
thought of how she could light up the sky. After a month, Tarintina
had almost given up and the villagers had almost given up hope until Tarintina
remembered what Roberto had said, “A ball of fire…” Tarintina
got an idea and made a plan.
That very night, Tarintina
took two sticks and rubbed them together and soon a flame appeared. After
a while the fire grew and grew and Tarintina took it in her hands and threw
it as far as she could. The fire hit one of the two moons and it
went up in flames. The sky lit up.
The villagers crowded
around Tarintina and oohed and ahhed over it until Roberto’s son,
Perkito asked, “Does it have a name?”
Tarintina knelt so her face was level to his.
“Yes, it is called
the sun because you are the son of the man that gave me that brilliant
idea.” Roberto beamed.
From
that day on, children played, women sewed, men farmed, the sun shined
and everyone was happy.
