Electives/Exploratory Program Grade Six

All sixth grade students will participate in an Exploratory sequence which consists of nine weeks of instruction in each of the following:

  • Visual Arts – advancing knowledge, skills, and experiences in the areas of creative process, media exploration, and art history.

  • General Music – exploring further knowledge, skills, and experiences in the areas of rhythm, melody, and form

  • Keyboarding and Career Modular Technology - improving keyboarding skills and the use of multi-media to learn principles and applications in areas of communications, transportation, construction, manufacturing, and bio-related careers

  • Spanish – exploring Spanish language and culture through themes that support reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies. Students will be immersed in Spanish to advance their skills and knowledge of the target language

Sixth grade students will choose one of the following year-long Elective options:

  • Chorus – an opportunity to learn more about music and perform a variety of popular and cultural music

  • Band – daily instrumental instruction for students who play wind or percussion instruments (See Instumental Music Curriculum [pdf])

  • Orchestra – daily instrumental instruction for students who play traditional string instruments (See Instumental Music Curriculum [pdf])

  • Drama/Speech/Debate – development of performance of skills in the areas of verbal and non-verbal language
