integrating science and technology

Summary:
In this lesson, students will learn the structure of different molecules.

Description:
Students will learn about valence electrons and how the number of them in an atom relates to the number of chemical bonds that atom can form. Based on this, students will be able to figure out the structure of specific molecules from their chemical formulas. Students will then use a drawing program to draw these molecules.

Timeframe: 1 class period (40 minutes)
Additional computer time at home

Materials: Molecule ball sets (toothpicks and marshmallows or gumdrops can be used as substitutes)
Appleworks or Microsoft Drawing programs
Student handouts
