The following materials are required:

  • data table created by teacher (see below) - one for each child
  • pencils for recording yes or no answers
  • 6 clear plastic cups for each child
  • 6 tooth picks or stirrers for each child
  • 6 spoons for each child
  • 6 different substances for each child (examples include salt, sand, rice, drink mix, paper circles, and baking soda) In addition, have the same materials ready for a teacher demonstration, although different substances should be used so that students can make their own predictions
  • paper towels for spills
  • water source (pitcher) available
  • overhead projector - if children will learn how to use the data table with a whole group presentation

Create your own data table or use one of the following:

  • Sample data table (pdf)
  • Sample data table (AppleWorks)

Choose the pdf if you want a copy you can print without changes. Choose the AppleWorks version if you'd like to have a copy of the original document. You can make changes to the AppleWorks document, but not to the pdf. The AppleWorks document will be downloaded to the Documents folder on your computer's hard drive.
