Water Sample Project

A) Summary: The purpose of this project is to determine the properties of water samples taken from various locations from around the globe. Students will design a way to obtain a sample of water from various geographical locations and analyze the properties of the water.  Through collaboration and experimentation, students will discover and understand that the composition of water can be drastically different when taken from different locations. Students will also understand correlation between the composition of water and the temperature at which it boils.

B) Description: In this experiment, students will obtain a sample of water and record the following information:

  • Source of sample (latitude and longitude)
  • Date and Time Sample was taken
  • Volume of water
  • Mass of water
  • Density of water
  • Color and odor of Water
  • pH level
  • Temperature at which the sample of water boils
  • Optional test: Nitrate Levels, Phosphate Levels.

Develop a hypothesis for the experiment:

Which factor do you think will have the greatest influence on boiling point? Why?
