Thematic Units

These units were developed in the University 97 course, "Designing Topical and Thematic Units" held during the summer of 1996 under the guidance of Jenny Knight. These units are works in progress and will be updated as they are refined.

This topic will be comfortable and motivating for the child early in the school year so we can begin to expand the child's experiences as they are working toward achieving their individual goals.

Socks and Shoes

Multi-age Primary

This big idea is an important one to explore with children, one which requires a lifetime of awareness and attention.

Choices

Thematic Unit for K-1

Everything in life is related; one event has an effect on another. A sense of wonder will form the backbone of our lessons. We have chosen to write the Earth, Sun & Moon unit in great detail. This unit is heavily based on inquiry and activities, so the children will wonder "why?" and to foster and facilitate their creativity in thought, word and deed!

Relationships

Celebrating Cultural Differences

Four topical units are included within this theme - cultural differences, differences in literature genres, topographical differences throughout the world, and mathematical differences throughout civilization.

The great artists, writers and scientists of the Renaissance model for our children the power of a vibrant imagination. Through the stories of these creative giants, our children will witness the value of courage, discipline, curiosity and commitment.

Music has its inventors: people who have designed new musical instruments, as well as composers who have created new ways of composing music. There are also music inventions without names of individual people, since many new ideas in music were a result of various people contributing ideas and trying new things over a period of years.
