2002 FIFA World Cup
By Elena L.
If a little ball with black pentagons on it means
anything to you, you must love soccer. Soccer, or futbol as
it's called in Europe, has been rising in popularity in the
U.S. in recent years, owing much to the success of the
Women's National Team. At any rate, if you like soccer,
you'll want to get all the info on the 2002 FIFA World
Cup.
First of all, FIFA stands for Federation Internationale
de Football Association. It sets standards for equipment
and, most importantly, organizes international soccer
matches.
This year, the host countries are Korea and Japan, who are
in total cooperation with each other. Even the official 2002
poster was made by two prominent artists, one from each
country.
Preliminary matches have already been set up, though many
have not yet been played, including the US v. Germany match
on March 27, 2002. FIFA information has been confusing,
saying that some matches, such as the US-Germany match, are
"friendlys" (unclear; in youth leagues, these are games that
are not counted in a team's overall rank) and that others
are qualifying matches.
Check out the current rankings;here
for the rest, we'll keep you up to date!
