danjiri Festival

The Danjiri Matsuri might be said to have it's origins about 400 years ago during the Genroku era. It was a festival to pray for a good harvest. The castle gates were opened and the people were allowed into the castle grounds for the festival days. Even if the various Feudal Lords had been having andy disagreement, they put that aside, using the festival to express competition. The danjiri teams raced through the castle grounds and sometimes crashed into each other.

The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri is held each year on the 14th and 15th of September. Thirty-two danjiri begin the high spirited 'race' through the town at 6am. This is called the hiki-dashi.
