Bowling is a game where you try to knock down as many pins as you can with a bowling ball that weighs around eight to fifteen pounds. There are three holes in the ball where you put your thumb, middle and ring fingers.

How to play

1. You start by choosing a ball of your choice.

2. The game starts by choosing what order the players go in, this can be decided in many different ways. Coin toss, oldest to youngest etc...

3. The first player picks up their ball with their middle and ring fingers. You hold the ball upright, and then you bring the ball backwards at a degree angle. To see a visual way of doing the four step approach click here.

4. Then the next person takes their turn.

You also need special shoes to bowl, this is because most regular shoes scratch the bowling area’s floor. And the bottom of bowling shoes are smooth and flat.

This is how the pins are arranged in a game of Bowling. The best place for the bowling ball to hit is the #1 pin

Scoring

A bowling score sheet is split up into 10 frames, and each frame is split up into two slots. The two slots represent each time you bowl or throw/roll the bowling ball. Each frames score is added to the one before it.

In frame 1 the fist bowl slot I knocked down 5 pins. On my next throw I knocked down 4 pins. The total of pins I knocked down(5+4) is 9 and that is recorded below. In the next frame I bowled a 7(6+1) that is added to the previous score 9, for a total of 16. In the third frame one of the slots has a line through it. This means that I bowled a gutter. I hit no pins because the ball went in the gutter. In the tenth frame there is a zero, this simply means I didn't get a gutter ball but I didn't hit any pins.

In the fourth frame there is a slash in the second slot there is another one in the eighth frame. This means that I got a spare. A spare is when you knock all or the rest of the pins down in the second slot(that's 10 pins total). The scoring is different when you get a spare. You add on the first slot of your next turn. Look at the fourth frame the total of it is 14 because I bowled a 4 on the first slot of my next turn. And 10 plus 4 equals 14. On the sixth frame there is a red X(it's not usually red I just wanted to make it stand out). That is called a strike, a strike is when you knock all the pins down on your first throw. You score a strike kind of like you score a spare. Except on a strike you add the next 2 slots. In the seventh frame I knocked down a total of 9 pins, so you add the 9 to the previous score so it's like I knocked 19 pins down in the sixth frame. In the tenth frame there is three slots, this is because the game ends here, and if you get a spare you'll still be able to add on a score by going one more time.

The highest score you can get in bowling is a 300 this means that you have bowled all strikes.

There are two “difficulties” in bowling one is primarily for younger children(left) and the other one is used by pretty much everyone else(right). The easier way includes bumpers, bumpers are usually rubber and they go on the sides of the bowling lane this makes it nearly impossible to get a gutter ball.

There is usually a range of bowling balls to choose from.
