In 1998 the Akash Kaikyo Bridge was completed stretching 12,828 feet from the city of Kobe to Awaji-shima Island. The bridge spans the Akashi Strait, which is very busy, so the engineers had to be sure it didn't block shipping traffic. It also had to withstand hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes.
