Smoking Survey

Novosibirsk and Oak Park

We ran an anonymous survey between school students of 15-17 about smoking.
159 boys and girls answered our questions.
Here are the results.
We wanted to know how many students smoke. The results are the following:
55% - constant smokers.
23 % - smoke sometimes
10 % - tried, but didn’t like
12 % - never smoked.

Half of smokers began smoking at the 6-7 grades at school.

We asked smokers why they began smoking.
Students told the following reasons:
- all people smoked in our company
- I wanted to look like adult
- I wanted to impress the girls
- my class mates laughed at me

The next question was where students take money, because cigarettes are very expensive.
See the answers:

- I use pocket money that my parents give me
- I buy cigarettes instead of food at school
- I take money from mother’s purse
- I prefer to smoke my friends’ cigarettes

We asked if smokers want to give up.
40% answered that don’t want to do it at the moment, but can do when they want.
60% want to do it, but don’t know how. They have already tried, but can’t give up.

We thought that was an outstanding idea so we did the same thing. While we ran our survey with everyone in the community we were able to isolate the 106 students from our local high school - ages 14-18. Here are our results.

We asked: Do you smoke?

7.8% - constant smokers.
17.5 % - smoke sometimes
21.4 % - tried, but didn’t like
53.4 % - never smoked.

79% of the smokers did not start until high school, most at age 16.

Students gave the following reasons for starting to smoke:
- all my friends were doing it
- I wanted to look adult
- I wanted to impress people
- my family smoked so I wanted to try it.

We also asked where do you get the money for your cigarettes?
