Kiyomizu-Dera Buddhist Temple

This temple which belongs to teh Kita Hõso sect was founded by Enchin, the great priest, in the 8th year of Hoki (778 A.S.), enshrines in main sanctuary and image of Kannon (God of Mercy) Bosatsu (Bodhi-Sattva). This buddhist god of mercy and benevolence has beenn the object of the ardent faith of Japanese people of all classes throuh the age.

The present structures rebuilt in the 17th century (1633) consist of Romon (two storied gate) Sanjunoto (three storied pagoda), Shoro (belfry), and some others. The scenery in this temple is so excellent that people come to view it from all over the country especially at the seasons of cherry blossoms in spring and maple leaves in autumn.
