North of the equator, people enter the darkest time of the year during the early winter season. In all cultures there are holidays which bring light and cheer into this otherwise dark period. Celebrations such as the Festival of the Lights, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year sometimes have religious origins. Many have become part of the culture apart from the original religions.
