Oshiro Matsuri (Castle Festival) is the biggest event in Himeji. People enjoy seeing a Daimyo Gyoretsu (Procession of Feudal Lords), parade of "the Queens of Himeji Castle'' and Grand Dance late into the night. With Takigi Noh (Firelight Noh) as the main event, drum, archery, and kendo competitions are held, products are sold, and paintings, bonsai, and chrysanthemum arrangements are displayed. On August 4, the festival begins with the Himeji Castle Noh Drama, performed outdoors in a world echoing subtly with firelight at night against the background of the castle. The main event, “Big Parade”, starts the next day followed by an introduction of Castle’s Queen. Then about 2000 citizens come together to dance the “So-Odori” which is the highlight of the festival. Amateur bands also perform the Sound Festival.
