Skyrail rainforest foundation: http://www.skyrailfoundation.org/
Vision: The protection of tropical rainforests worldwide through
sound management, understanding and appreciation through research
and education.
The skyrail was completed in 1995 and travels above the canopy
of the rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park. The canopy
is a natural rooftop of the rainforest protecting the forest floor
from rain while keeping in the humidity.
While in the gondola you might see butterflies or birds feeding
among the trees or, depending on the moisture, hear the frogs
or cicadas.
The Guru-Gulu Gungandji Aboriginal people welcome visitors to
Green Island, Wunyami, and ask that they take care of their special
place. The island and reef hold traditional and contemporary cultural
significance for the Gungandji people, who have an active role
in looking after these values for future generations. Culture
and history
Green Island was originally an initiation ground for the males of the Gungandji
people. In Aboriginal, Green Island is actually called Wunyami which means
'place of haunted spirits'. Green Island was given it's current name by James
Cook in 1770, after Mr Charles Green who was an astronomer onboard the Endeavour. |
