Halloween Dance

Halloween in the United States is a special holiday for children. It is a fun, exciting, disgusting, and terrifying holiday all at the same time! People decorate their houses with ghosts and carved jack-o-lanterns and many other scary things.  Stores display costumes and masks of all kinds, and sell patches of pumpkins.  At night on October 31 children celebrate Halloween by dressing up in a costume and going trick-or-treating. This practice involves going door to door in the neighborhood and shouting "trick or treat." Not wanting to have a trick played on them, the neighbors respond by giving the children a treat, usually candy.

As in may other secondary schools, Eastwood Academy held a Halloween dance at night.  A room was created like a dark haunted house with flashing lights and very loud music. Students disguised in vampire and many other eerie characters coming to the dance, usually with a dance partner.  As usual, parents got involved to provide food and support.  The event was one of the fund raisers for the senior prom at the end of the year.

Thanksgiving Dinner

In the United States, aside from the Thanksgiving meal, we have come to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with parades, football, and the start of the Christmas shopping season.

Picture the traditional Thanksgiving dinner: A loving family, a festive table with the turkey, golden brown, with stuffing and gravy on the side, awaiting the carving knife and whetting the appetites of all those present. This scene, however, is not from history, but it emerges from a desire to thank teachers and staff who have done so many things for the children at Eastwood Academy.  It has become a tradition that parents serve this Thanksgiving dinner at school every year. The Eastwood Academy family and administrators from East Region gathered on this day to recognize everyone’s effort in educating the children.  Everyone enjoyed a good meal with Hispanic singing entertainment.

Motivation Speech

Eastwood Academy is a college preparatory school.  So it often organizes to have many events to open the door to college for students.  A college night last month provided students with various information, and opportunities to meet with college representatives from different universities. Students benefited from scholarships offered, answers to questions, application handouts, etc.

At the same week, a Hispanic professor of the University of Houston from Clear Lake came to motivate Hispanic students at Eastwood to set high future goals, take risk, believe in themselves, and achieve their big dream.

She indeed captured the crowd’s attention.  Every student seemed to put a lot of thinking about what the professor had to say.

Faces Around Our World

This year our school-wide project was about how the world has changed during the past years.  I selected to write about Mrs. Trejo’s class project, “Faces Around the World.”

Students chose famous persons from different countries and wrote about how they became famous, what contributions they have made to their country and the world, and what makes their country unique. They, each, also made a mask with the country flag on it.

The project was well organized and shows great effort from every student.

This project is a great way to show that the world is different, but we all try to make it a better place to live in.

Evolution of the Automobile

Twice a year Eastwood Academy has a school-wide project. This fall semester the topic was “Around Our Changing World”

One of the projects displayed was “Evolution of the Automobile”. The display has pictures of automobiles from the past and present time. Next to these pictures were simple sentences explaining the different eras and phases of the automobiles

One history fact stated that the first propelled engine was introduced in the late 1800’s.  Many years later, Henry Ford introduced the first automobile in 1914. Ever since that time the car has been through different cultures and phases. Their different cultures have transformed the automobile into so many different things that I’m sure early people wouldn’t have imagined. The different cultures are the Lowrider, import racing and hip hop.

The evolution of the automobile has evolved into something Henry Ford could even think of.
