William Eugene Smith, American photographer, died in 1978. He'd been a photographer for Life magazine, where he did many photo essays; most notable of which was the photographic report on mercury pollution in Minamata, a city in Kumamoto perfecture.

The National Museum has been aquiring his works for years. Read below to find out more about these acquisitions and about his life, career, and passion for photography.
