Grade 1, Charles C. Cashman School, Amesbury, Massachusetts

little red hen book coverMost letters are here. Still to come: a, h, j, k, and z.

Once upon a time there was a little red hen. She found seeds of wheat. "Who will help me plant these seeds?"

"Not I," said the dog.

"Not I," said the cat.

"Not I," said the mouse.

So the little red hen said, "I will plant them myself." and she did. She raked, watered and weeded the seeds and soon they grew into wheat.

" Who will help me cut down the wheat?" asked little red hen.

"Not I" said the dog. "Not I" said the cat.

"Not I" said the mouse.

So the little red hen said, "I will do it myself." and she did.

When she had gathered all the wheat the little red hen asked "Who will help me bring this wheat to the mill so it may be ground into flour?"

 "Not I" said the dog.

"Not I" said the cat.

"Not I" said the mouse.

So the little red hen said, "I will do it myself." and she did.

She rode to the mill in a van and brought home the flour made from wheat. When the little red hen arrived home she asked, "Who will help me bake a cake?"

"Not I" said the dog.

"Not I" said the cat.

"Not I" said the mouse.

So the little red hen mixed all the ingredients together and poured the batter into cake pans and baked her cake. When the cake was done the dog, cat and mouse smelled something wonderful coming from the kitchen. They wandered into the kitchen to see what smelled so good. The little red hen asked "Who will eat this cake?"

 "I will" said the dog.

"I will" said the cat.

"I will" said the mouse.

But the little red hen remembered how she had planted the seeds, tended the wheat, cut the wheat, brought it to the mill to be ground into flour and made the cake all by herself. "I'm going to eat it all by myself!" said the little red hen. And she did to the very last crumb.

After that when there was worked to be done the little red hen had three very eager helpers.
