The Emperor's New Clothes

Grade 1 - Woodward Academy Primary School, Atlanta, Georgia

Retold by Mrs. Peek's Class

Once there was a royal emperor who was very rich and just loved clothes and thought he was the best person in the whole world. One day a group of jokesters zipped into town and heard about the emperor. They heard that the emperor loved clothes. So they decided to disguise themselves as weavers. The jokesters said that they would weave a cloth to make fine clothes for the emperor. But the fabric was magical because nobody besides the emperor could see it. The jokesters made the suit out of invisible yarn. Fools would be unable to see it.

The emperor gave the swindlers a chest of gold. The emperor was nosy because he wondered what his new clothes looked like. He sent his royal servant to check on his new clothes. The royal servant thought after not seeing the clothes, "Can it be that I am a fool?" The royal servant told the emperor, " I think your clothes are beautiful". The jokesters lied about the invisible clothes. The jokesters helped the emperor put on his new clothes. The emperor looked at himself in the mirror. The emperor felt guilty for feeling like he was not a good emperor because he could not see the clothes. The emperor gave the jokesters twenty more chests of gold. The jokesters were mean. They will get in trouble if the emperor finds out he was tricked.

The emperor wanted to show his clothes to everyone in the town. Everyone in the town gathered to see the emperor's new clothes. When the emperor came out the people were surprised to see the emperor wearing only his crown on his head and his underwear. The emperor felt dignified and very much like a king when he walked down the street. Everybody was quiet when they saw the emperor without any clothes on. When the people saw the emperor's new clothes they were afraid to tell him he had no clothes. A little boy was standing by his mother and said, "Mother, the emperor has no clothes on." The emperor was very embarrassed, but did not want to tell anyone that he knew the truth. So the emperor kept on marching down the street in his underwear. The jokesters were exiled to another country.
