The Frog Prince

Grade 2 - Lakeview School - Tyngsborough, Massachusetts
Teachers: Terry McEnaney & Laurie Patterson

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who always played with a small golden ball. She went everywhere with it. One day when she was playing by a well, she threw the ball high into the sky and the ball fell into the deep, and wide well. The princess cried her eyes out! She heard a voice saying, "Why are you crying ?" The princes looked in the well and saw the ugly slimy frog swimming in the well. The frog offered to get her ball. The princess was excited because he was going to get her ball back, so she promised the frog he could have whatever he wanted. The frog answered the princess by saying, " I want to sip from your golden cup, eat from your golden plate and sleep on your soft, silky pillow." The princess gladly promised to do this. The frog jumped into the deep well and got the golden ball for the princes. She then ran quickly to the castle. The frog followed her there.
Later that evening while the king and princess were enjoying a quiet dinner, they heard the flip, flap of the frogs feet on the steep castle stairs. The frog knocked on the door and when the princess opened the door, she was horrified to see the frog and quickly slammed the door shut. The king sternly asked the princess " What is the problem?" The princess then told him all about her promise to the frog. The king replied that she must keep her promise, so she slowly and sadly opened the castle door. The frog leaped joyfully onto the long wooden table where he sipped from the golden cup, and nibbled from the golden plate. The tired frog yawned loudly and reminded her that he was to sleep on her soft, silky pillow. She disgustingly carried the frog inside to where she slept. Instead of putting the frog on her pillow, she became angry and violently threw him against the wall. The frog was magically transformed into a handsome prince with a sparkling jeweled crown. He described to her how he had been zapped many years earlier by a witch and turned into an ugly frog.
A few days later, the prince and the princess were happily married and lived together for many years.
