Grade 2, Charles C. Cashman School, Amesbury, Massachusetts
On one side were the ones who had wings, they were the birds. On the other side were the ones who had teeth, they were the animals. But one creature was left out, the bat. Bat flew over to the animals because he had teeth, but bear said it would not be fair because he had wings. So bat flew over to the birds but the birds laughed at him because he was so small. Bat went back to the animals and told bear what had happened so bear said he could be on their team but because he was so small he should hold back and let the bigger animals play first. The goal posts were set up and the game began. They played all day. Everyone was tired. It became that the birds had the advantage. They could fly up into the air and the animals could not reach them. Just as the sun was going down Crane had the ball and bear could not stop him. It looked like the birds were going to win. Suddenly, at dusk, a small dark shape flew onto the field and stole the ball. It was bat. He could see in the twilight. He scored the goal for the animals. The birds had lost, the animals had won. This is how the bat became accepted as an animal. Bat set the penalty for the birds. He told them they must leave the land for half of ever year. That is why the birds fly south every winter and everyday bat still comes out at dusk to play.
