The Gingerbread Man

Grade 2 - Arlington School - Lawrenceville, Illinois

An old couple live in a small cottage at the edge of the forest. One day the little old lady decided to bake some cookies. The lady said, "Gingerbread cookies taste delicious. The old couple loved homemade gingerbread cookies. She mixed all of the ingredients in a bowl. The old lady made a small batch of gingerbread dough. When she opened the oven door, the gingerbread man jumped from the pan. He ran under the table and out the door.

The old lady shouted, "Come back, you can't go!"

The cookie answered, "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man."

He came to an ox standing in the field chewing on some grass. The "x-tra" large ox wanted to eat the gingerbread man. The large ox was known as Zack.

The gingerbread man called to Zack, "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man."

It wasn't long before he met a dog. The big dog drooled when it spotted the cookie. The dog yelled, "Stop, stop" to the gingerbread man.

The gingerbread man answered, "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man."

A cat sat by the road licking her paws. The cat saw the gingerbread man and purred, "Oh please stop!"

Again the gingerbread man said, "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man."

Soon the gingerbread man came to the gigantic Mississippi River. The gingerbread man stopped to catch his breath. He wondered how he would get across. The gingerbread man knew the water would make him wet and soggy. "If only I had a kayak for crossing the river" he said. A sly old fox came to him. He said, "You can sit on my nose while I swim across and won't even get wet.

The gingerbread man thought this was a very good idea. He jumped up quickly on the sly old fox's nose. The sly old fox opened up his mouth and began to nibble on the cookie. Finally the gingerbread man was gone!

Cookies are supposed to be eaten anyway. Aren't they?
