The Gingerbread Baby

Grade 1, Village Elementary School, Hartland, Michigan

Matti and his mother pulled out a worn cookbook. Matti went to the page that said “Gingerbread Boy”. Matti’s mother took down a bowl. They stirred and mixed and rolled the dough. They made the shape of a gingerbread boy. Matti put the gingerbread shape into the oven for eight minutes. The recipe said “Do not peek!” But Matti couldn’t wait – he peeked. A gingerbread baby came out of the oven. He pranced around the bowl and ran all around the kitchen.

Matti’s dad came into the house. He said “What’s that delicious smell?” The gingerbread baby tumbled through his legs. He ran outside and met the tabby cat. Then he met the dog. Then the gingerbread baby went over the fence. When he was in the middle of the fence the dog caught up. The gingerbread baby went into the barn and cartwheeled over the last goat. The goat tried to catch him. But the gingerbread baby was too fast. He went out of the barn.

He went up the path to the well where Madeline and Martha were getting a bucket of water. The gingerbread baby stopped to take a sip. Martha and Madeline tried to catch the gingerbread baby. But he was too clever for them. He took a braid from Madeline and Martha and tied them in a knot.

He zipped along the path to the bridge. He could hear the villagers running after him. He jumped over the rail and landed on a chunk of ice.

When his feet got cold he quickly jumped ashore. He got into a wagon with a mama pig. She tried to eat him. She threw him into the air but he twisted and landed on her porky snout.

There was a fox peeking from the trees. The fox was catching up to the gingerbread baby but the gingerbread baby heard the fox smack his chops.

The gingerbread baby ran as fast as he could into the milk and cheese cart. He saw a good hiding spot in the milk bucket. He sang in a high voice, “You’ll never catch me!” The milk and cheese man heard him. He said, “Who is meddling with my milk?” The gingerbread baby hopped out of the milk bucket and pinched his nose.

He ran into the woods and smelled a familiar smell. In the middle of a clearing he found a gingerbread house. Matti was hiding behind the trees waiting for the gingerbread baby to go into the gingerbread house. Matti took the gingerbread house and the gingerbread baby home.

When the villagers got to the clearing all they found were a few crumbs and some candy. Matti’s mother and father went back home and told Matti that they couldn’t catch the gingerbread baby. Matti said, “Too bad!”

Only Matti could hear the tiny voice of the gingerbread baby from inside the gingerbread house.
