How Night Came to Be

Grade 1 - Woodward Academy Primary School, Atlanta, Georgia

Retold by Mrs. Rivera-Williams' First Grade

Long ago there was no night. Daylight filled the sky. Darkness could only be found in one place &endash; the big blue sea. Bonita lived in the big blue sea with her father the Sea Serpent. Bonita had very green hair. Bonita left the dark sea and walked into the jungle. She was excited to come out of the big blue sea. "I love the light of this world," said Bonita.

Bonita walked and walked until she came to a village of straw houses. Long ago, in the Amazon Jungle, people lived in straw houses. The people had never seen such a beautiful girl. They fell in love at once. "Please stay with us," said the chief. The chief was kind to Bonita even though she was different from them. In time, the two were married. They lived happily.

In time, Bonita grew sad. The Chief was worried about her. One day he asked her, "Bonita, why are you so sad?"

"I am tired and need to rest my eyes." Bonita was tired of seeing the sunlight and she missed the darkness of her own world. So the Chief quickly got three men from the village. He told them to go to the Sea Serpent and ask for some darkness. The three men went to the Sea Serpent and asked for darkness.

The Sea Serpent filled a bag with darkness. In the bag there was darkness. The Sea Serpent yelled to the men, "Do not open the bag!" The three men walked back to the village with the heavy bag. It began to make noise and to move around. The men were a little scared and a little curious. One man thought they should sit on the bag. Another thought to poke the bag with a stick. The third man wanted to open the bag, and before the other two men could stop him, the third man opened the bag. "Let us run away," said one man to the two others.

Out of the bag flew darkness and the creatures of the night. The sky grew dark. Bonita was so glad that night had come. She came out of her home to see the darkness in the sky. She found the bag that carried the darkness. She put her hand inside of the bag and found a piece of a shell. She threw this piece of shell into the sky and it became the moon. Now Bonita could rest her tired eyes.

As for the three men, the chief zapped the men into monkeys for disobeying the Sea Serpent. The three men were eXiled from the village to live in the trees as monkeys. Now the nights were dark and quiet. The people of the land would live happily with day and night.
