The Legend of the Loon

By: Kathy-jo Wargin
Retold by: The Busy Bees
Village Elementary, Hartland, Michigan

Near a forest there was a lake. Around the lake were many cottages. There was one cottage away from the others. In that cottage lived an old grandmother. Her name was Grandmother Lom.

Grandmother Lom had two grandchildren – a boy and a girl. The grandchildren liked to visit and play with Grandmother Lom. Grandmother Lom taught them how to look for faces on the trees in the forest. She took them out on the lake in her small white boat but she never took them out of the bay because it was too dangerous. Grandmother Lom showed them she could scoop up a fish from the lake with her hand. They would sit around a fire at night and sing, dance, jump, and listen to Grandmother Lom’s stories.

One day the grandchildren took Grandmother Lom’s boat into the lake without telling her. Suddenly a fog zoomed onto the lake. The boat went too far out of the bay. They were scared. They cried for help. Grandmother Lom called out to them, “Where are you?” Grandmother Lom was so upset and worried. She kept waving her arms excitedly and calling out “Where are you?” Suddenly she turned into a loon and helped her grandchildren get back to the shore.

When they got to the shore they looked everywhere for their grandmother but could not find her. They found her white apron laying on the wet sand. Then they heard the loon calling out from the water. They realized it was Grandmother Lom quietly calling out to them.
