The Little Yellow Chicken

Grade 1, Ardmore School, Villa Park, Illinois

Story By Joy Cowley
Retold By Grade 1 - Teacher: Mrs. Lobdell

This story is about a Little Yellow Chicken.  The Little Yellow Chicken thought he'd have a party with his friends. His friends were a bee, a beetle and a frog.  The Little Yellow Chicken asked his friends to help him get ready for the party.  "Hop it!" said the frog.  "Buzz off!" said the laZy bee.  And the big brown beetle said, "Quit bugging me!"  He went shopping all by himself.

He cooked all the food himself.  When the food was done, he was ready to set the table.  His friends wouldn't do anything.  The Little Yellow Chicken had to do all of the jobs by himself.   He worked very hard.  The friends wouldn't help until the food was ready.  Then they wanted to go to the party.  "I'm hungry!" said the frog.  "I'm starving!" said the bee.  And the big brown beetle said, "What about me?"

The Little Yellow Chicken called his grandmother on the telephone.   His grandmother was the Little Red Hen, but she was all grown up!  "My friends wouldn't help me," he said.  "Now they want to come to my party.  What shall I do?"

The Little Yellow Chicken was a kind chicken. He opened the door for his friends and he let his friends come to the party.  He was nicer than his grandmother.  Do you think his grandmother would be mad if she knew?

His friends were eXcited to go to his excellent party.  "Fantastic!" said the frog.  "Amazing!" said the bee.  And the big brown beetle said, "A scrumptious tea!"  The next time he has a party his friends will do all of the work.  "That's a good idea," said the Little Yellow Chicken, as he was relaxing in his lawn chair in the warm sun.
