Retold By the Kids in Mrs. Yager's Class One very cold winter day, the North Wind was blowing cold air and snowflakes all around! "Please collect some firewood so we can stay warm!" said the chilly woman, who was knitting a new pair of mittens for her grandson. A little boy began trudging through the thick, snow-covered forest gathering twigs for firewood so his grandmother could make a good fire. While he collected wood in his sled, he saw zillions of snowflakes falling from the sky. When he walked out of sight, one of his mittens accidentally dropped on top of a snowdrift! As soon as the little boy was gone, a miniature mouse scurried inside the red, wool-lined mitten. The mitten was just the right size for a tiny mouse! The mouse heard a voice. "Anybody home?" asked a frog, hip-hopping over the high snow. "Come in quickly before you freeze," answered the mouse. An owl was flying overhead when suddenly he saw the feathery, fur-cuffed mitten. "May I join you in that lovely mitten?" asked the owl. "You may come inside Owl, if you mind your manners!" said the mouse. Next a rabbit spied the mitten and thought it looked REALLY warm! He hopped in with the others where he knew he would be very toasty. Even a fox trotted up to the mitten to join the other creatures to get out of the cold snow! Just as they were all snuggly and comfortable, a wolf decided that he needed to warm up and so he squished into the mitten. The mitten was very crowded by now! The mitten was beginning to stretch when a wild boar asked if he could come in and get away from the cold wind. He promised to be careful and squeezed inside! All the animals were settled until a bear arrived! "You can't come in, bear! There's NO MORE ROOM!" the animals screamed. "It's a bit tight in this mitten already," said the boar. "Nonsense, you can make room for me!" roared the bear. The seams began to split and pop as he pushed his way in. The animals were finally snuggly and squished inside. A tiny old cricket with achy, creaky legs saw the mitten and knew this was a warm place to stay. Unfortunately, as she put her first foot inside the mitten, "RIP! TEAR!" The stitches came apart and all the animals popped out of the mitten and into the snow! The little boy loaded the last stick on his sled. At that moment, the little boy realized he only had only one mitten. He went back to try to find his missing mitten. But he only found ripped pieces of his mitten scattered on the snow! With the North Wind nipping at his nose, he headed back home. He knew his grandmother would be knitting a new pair of mittens. He was excited to get back home to make a good, warm fire and see if his mittens were complete! He never did know what happened to his lost mitten!
