Music

A Tale from South America
Multiage Class, Totara North School, Totara North, New Zealand

Out of the dark empty sky appeared the Lord of the Night.  He stared in his magic mirror upon the men, women and children who lived in the silent, dull world.

No birds were singing.
No frogs were croaking.
No flowers were blooming.
No children were laughing.
No men were whistling.
No women were dancing.
Everyone, even the animals, was unhappy. The Lord of the Night summoned the wind, and commanded him to go to the sun and free the musicians.

The Lord of the Wind argued with the Night for some weapons, because he needed them to protect himself. He was given a turquoise shield, black thunder clouds and some lightning bolts. He was also told some friends would help him.

Wind flew off over the horizon and found Fish Woman, Alligator Woman, and Turtle Woman. He hopped on their backs and they took him across the sea, lashing the water with their feet and tails. Behind them were waves of white foam. Bubbles spat up out of the water onto Wind’s face. When they reached the beach they stopped suddenly, throwing wind into the air.

Wind traveled to the kingdom of the Sun and asked for the musicians. Sun refused. Wind demanded the musicians. Sun got angry and shot some fiery darts at the wind. Wind pulled out his turquoise shield and the darts bounced off it. Wind threw his black thunder clouds, which expanded until they covered the sun and blinded him. The four musicians escaped with Wind. They grasped his cloak and escaped back to earth. Wind threw the lightning so he could see in the dark.

As they got closer to earth colours began to appear.
The wavy water turned green and blue.
The grass on the hills became green, and the snow and ice turned white.

The musicians landed and began to play.  The green musician faced north and played a song of dawn on his rattles to wake people up and send them to work.  The red musician turned to the east and played a joyful song on her drum for people to play and work to.  The yellow musician faced west and played a quiet calm lullaby on his flute for people to rest by.  The blue musician faced south and played a jazzy song of night on her shell, so people could tell stories and dance.

Frogs began to croak.
Colourful birds began to sing.

Children laughed, men whistled, and women sang and danced.  Sun, Wind and Night were all happy, and a rainbow appeared in the sky.

Wind had won the victory.
