Week 30 Highlights:

                                       WORM WEEK: Hoedown Underground!

The Bells viewed a video, WILD! Science: Worm Farm Hoedown Underground, about a scientist completing investigations and experiments with worms!  The Bells had the opportunity to watch this short film and report back to the class with 1 new piece of information they learned about worms.  This was communicated using a drawing that was completed during our viewing.

We also made plant observations this week.  Some growth has been seen from our individual gardens, but not for all of us.  We took the time to journal our plant's growth, gave the Bank of Beljung $0.05 for each water use, and brainstormed the reasons some plants experienced growth while others did not.

More viewing and sharing took place using a different tool, the iPad, after viewing Earth videos using the @Science360 app.

The adventures of Wiggle and Waggle were also introduced, followed by the Bells creating their own adventure to take with Wiggle and Waggle.  They wrote a piece that offered details about their adventure and illustrated a picture to match!

Mrs. Vincent came into the Bell classroom to share worm information and allowed us to observe our own individual ants!

Week 28 & 29 Highlights:

                                                            FROM SEED TO PLANT

We have continued to think about our Earth over the last two weeks.  The Bells have been busy using technology to investigate the materials our Earth gives us, as well as started planting projects.

The Bells went seed shopping, counted the seeds chosen for their gardens, and planted their seeds in soil... but it came at a price!

With money bags in hand, the Bells went to the Bank of Beljung to pay for their seeds and soil.  Once paying for the materials, water costs were explained and implemented.  Now each time a "garden" needs to be watered, the Bells pay the Bank of Beljung for this material.

Our own gardens are only one way to help our Earth be a healthier place!  In addition to planting, we have explored numerous other ways we can take care of our planet.  It is through our reading research that we were able to brainstorm these ideas and use them for a journaling activity.

Be sure to check out the Bells writing / art connection project hanging outside of our classroom!  Each Bell wrote about their favorite way to help the Earth, colored a coffee filter Earth / sprayed it down, and used their own photograph to complete the task.  Below is our final product!

Week 27 Highlights:

                                                            FROM SEED TO PLANT

This week we started thinking about our EARTH.  The children identified that our planet includes many different elements: humans, animals, plants, insects, air, land, water, and so much more.  We began discussing how each part of our Earth is connected, and our activity concluded when the children were each given a picture of something found on our planet to categorize.

Two stories were highlighted throughout the week to emphasize the components of a growing plant on Earth and the importance of these plants on our planet.  A class goal has been to have the students ASK and their classmates ANSWER questions about the text during reading.   Be sure to ask your Bell about our class "~Reading Wand~".

                                                              FANCY PLANT WORDS

SEEDLING        ROOTS        STEM          SHOOT        OXYGEN          SOIL          SPROUT

We did not only begin reading and exploring plants through texts, but also arranged preparations for our own class garden!

We were fortunate to have Eddie's mom complete a spring Art Appreciation project with the Bells.  This is now on display in our classroom.  Feel free to come in and check it out!

                                                       Water Exploration Week #11

                                                Water Completion!

This week we wrapped up all of our water efforts!  The Bells were fortunate to finish their unit with a trip to the Chicago Children's Museum.  It was there that we...

Acted as community workers and put out fires

Built forts using different materials and tools

                                                                                             Went digging for dinosaur bones

And of course, got a little wet and wild at the Water Works exhibit

                                                                     WATER WIGS

Our art connection continued this week and the Bells learned how the water wigs are created, completed their final "Water Wig" journal, andadded their silly face to their own water wig.

Week 25 Highlights:

                                                       Water Exploration Week #10

Getting Ready to Approach the Surface!

This week we got a little techy!  As part of our class goals, the Bells are creating an UNDERWATER STORY using digital tools and one another!  To get started the Bells began to brainstorm their ideas from all of the resources we have been exposed to over the last two months.

They were then introduced to an iPad app, iCardSort, which allowed the Bells to put all of their ideas in one place.  With assistance they used this app to record their thoughts.

The Bells were then asked to think about their story as having a beginning, middle, and an end.  iCardSort was used as a constant reference to keep our goal in mind and begin the writing process.

To develop their story EDUcreations is being used.  At this time the Bells are still in the process of authoring their class book.  More info to come next week!

Art Connection: Real People Doing Real Things With Water

The Bells have been creating their own projects, but we also explored the project of a special photographer that completed his own titled, "Water Wigs".  After viewing several of these shots the Bells got to thinking.... HOW DID THEY DO THAT?

...And so as a class the Bells recorded their thoughts as to how they believe the photographer was able to create these crazy "SpLaShInG WatEr WigS".  Not only that, but they loved the fluorescent color combinations so much, they began creating their own wigs!  This writing project is also to be continued...!

In addition to all of the reading and writing completed in class, the Bells also used the iPads to complete an activity with manipulatives and a 100's chart AND celebrated Pi Day by watching this video...

Week 24 Highlights:

                                                       Water Exploration Week #8

                                                Things Got Chilly!

On Tuesday the Bells kept an eye on the SNOW STORM via window observations, as well as checking The Weather Channel's Oak Park Weather Map each hour.  During indoor recess we also spent time with Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus gang as they had their own weather adventure!

We read A RAINY DAY.  Our focus area while reading is to identify "fancy words" the author has included in the text.  A RAINY DAY included: gloomy, splash, strike, & flood.  These were all words recognized by the children and used for discussion to understand their importance to the nonfiction text.

FIRST we FROZE it, THEN we MELTED it!

Each Bell brought in an object to freeze in water.  They recorded an illustration of their object, placed their objects in a container, added as much or as little water as they wanted, and into the freezer it went!

NOW HOW WILL WE GET OUR OBJECTS BACK?!

The Bells broke into groups to see which method melted ice in 10 minutes or less...

TABLE #3 Used tools to assist with melting and earning their objects back

TABLE #4 Used water to melt the ice and earn their objects back

Table #1 Waited for time to pass to see if their ice would melt

Table #2 Used salt to melt ice and get their objects back

At the end of what seemed like the LONGEST 10 minutes of our lives, we found that water melted the ice quickest in the conditions of our classroom... and we got our objects back!  Our class rating system is below:

#1  Use water to melt ice

#2  Use salt to melt ice

#3  Use tools to melt ice

#4 Wait for time to pass to melt ice

To give us some perspective on melting ice, the Bells engaged in a discussion on the use of salt on our snow / ice covered sidewalks and streets.  They compared the conditions of our classroom with the winter air and talked with one another about how throwing more water outside to melt ice would not be a good solution for our neighborhood.

To wrap up, we watched Collin's science fair experiment video - he is pretty funny!

                                                            Where do we find water?

(oceans / puddles / fishbowls / oh... and toilet bowls!)

A "Water Drop Dice Game" assisted us with addition and subtraction concepts

Comparison of LAND & WATER ANIMALS

Underwater Creatures were small on day #1 and grew by day #2!

We were sure of this because we took ruler measurements on both days!

Exploration of the phases of water took place using balloons filled with

water (liquid) / ice (solid) / air (gas)

and observations about each  were made to record in our science lab.

Inquiring minds wanted to know what would happen if you smashed our solid balloon....

                                                                And so we found out!

(we got a broken balloon and ice chips for all!)

Did we mention the implementation of Magic Mondays?!

On Monday Miss B. completed a magic trick in which she balanced a can

(with very little water in it) on it's side!

CRATER WRITING                                                                           Each astronaut chose if they wanted to TELL A STORY about the craters made last week or if they wanted to write about their crater using 'DESCRIBING WORDS'.

SHARED PART 3 of "THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS: SEEING STARS" with our 5th Grade Book Buddies

Expanded on the topic of stars to achieve a better understanding of CONSTELLATIONS.  As a class project each astronaut used their body to create an image of what their own constellation would look like in our night sky.  Photographs were taken, the images were simplified, and stickers were used to show star formations.

FRIDAY WAS OUR LAST DAY IN OUTER SPACE!!                                                     We entered the shuttle for the last time, buckled into our rocket seats, and closed the hatch before heading back to Earth!  Before our departute, Brody contacted Mission Control and all astronauts were asked to activate their control panel by entering their 4 digit secret code used during our launch from Earth.

Our class watched a simulation of a space shuttle re-entering the Earth's atmosphere & landing back on solid ground.

Once our mission was completed, a cermony took place in which each astronaut was presented with a certificate of completion from Oak Park's Space Camp.

                                                               AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST.....

WE CREATED A MOON CRAFT TO CAPTURE OUR MEMORIES IN SPACE....   Each astronaut's picture was taken while simulating a climb to the moon.  This image was then minimized and placed on each of their ladders headed toward the moon!

WHAT A MEMORABLE JOURNEY IT WAS!

SPACE CAMP: Life on the Moon!

This week the astronauts...

Used the following website to calculate their weight on the moon.

                                                   http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/

Were visited by "Allan the Alien Alligator".

He likes to gobble up astronauts and assisted us with greater than/less than weight comparisons on the moon.

Calculated how much our whole class weighs on the moon using addition and equal signs on a calculator.

Went investigating on the moon's surface to hunt for artifacts - moon rocks!

Watched a video and read a book about the moon's surface in our rocket seats.

Completed "MY ROCK AND ME" journals.

Check it out... Emily and her rock went camping!  How fun :-)

Week 14 Highlights:

SPACE CAMP: LAUNCH SUCCESS!

This week the astronauts extended their reading experience with 'Goldilocks and the Three Martians'!  Our class broke the book into 3 parts - beginning, middle, & end.  Once the breakdown was complete, we sequenced the beginning of the story together and illustrated each page with a partner.

...AND THEN CAME THE LAUNCH PARTY!

The astronauts entered Space Camp sporting their red, white, and blue wardrobe for our rocket launch.

They made a quick stop at the bank to fund their rocket launch costs.  Using their "Dime Books", each astronaut found 5 dimes to fund their blast off experience!  Once their budget was approved by the Bank of Beljung and they were confident they had packed up all of the necessary items for departure, each astronaut was asked to enter their Rocket Pod.

Rocket Pods were constructed with each astronaut's NASA rocket seat and control panel.  Their secret code was entered and we were ready for lift off!  Our launch experience was enhanced using a 4 minute launch video to assist with the count down.  Oak Park's astronauts loved hearing the crowd roar with excitement on the footage once lift off was achieved!

Once leaving the Earth's atmosphere the astronauts watched a short film of how outer space would appear to a shuttle of individuals viewing Earth from the moon.  They were amazed with the floating, white suits taking space walks outside of the rocket.  AND SO.... we used the image to create what we would look like in our astronaut suits!

Week 11 Highlights:

SPACE CAMP: Getting Ready for Lift-Off!

Space camp resumed to a busy group of astronauts this week!  After taking time to work on coin recognition last week, the astronauts were put to the test once entering the 'Bank of Beljung' early Monday morning!  Each astronaut was asked to collect 10 cents to pay for their rocket materials.  Luckily each and every astronaut could identify 10 pennies (front and back!), performed well at the bank, and received approval to begin creating their transportation vehicle for space!

The astronauts have chosen a rocket to be their mode of transportation to travel to space.  Rocket construction began during the day after some preparation.  By the time the astronauts finished, each had customized their space craft with their own name and nose cone/fin choices.

DAY 2 The astronauts took the day off to make some very important choices for their country.

DAY 3  We fantasized about space and wrote a journal entry about what we hope to see once leaving the Earth's atmosphere.  The possibilities seemed endless!

DAY 4 / DAY 5 The astronauts worked hard to create and complete devices that will be used to help us communicate with Earth while in route to the moon!  The control panels constructed by our astronauts are dependent on shape and 2-digit number code combinations.  Each astronaut has created a secret code specific to their own device that will allow them full access to their individual rocket controls.

OH!  And by the way... did I mention the astronauts have been collecting "space words" on our space camp board?!?  Ask your astronaut about this new vocabulary:

TRANSPORTATION                    LAUNCH                  VEHICLE                   ATMOSPHERE                 TRAVEL

This Week's BUZZ with the Beljung Bells...

Week 11 Highlights:

SPACE CAMP: Part II!

Space camp opened after the weekend to an enthusiastic group of astronauts.  We created a class space monster, but unfortunately the space monster's rocket crashed.  It is now our job to complete reading / phonemic related tasks to put his ship back together.  We have yet to determine just how long it will take us to assist the space monster...

DAY 2 The astronauts were joined by another space enthusiast, Mr. Reynolds!  Mr. Reynolds worked with our class to analyze some of the data we had been collecting.  With his help we were able to organize and graph our weight on Earth.  Thanks Mr. Reynolds!

WHOA!  On DAY 3 space camp was taken over by some creatures from another world!  They spoke of 'Halloween', played games, and used all of our materials!  We must leave Earth soon!

DAY 4 the astronauts were told they would soon be preparing for our departure from Earth... but for a price!  They will need to pay for the materials to build their space craft, so we took time analyzing and categorizing coins (pennies, nickles, dimes, & quarters).  This is a very crucial time for the astronauts because it is only with approval by the 'Bank of Beljung' that everyone at our Space Camp will be able to lift off in time to land on the moon!

DAY 5 Mr. Reynolds helped us wrap up our data collection and the astronauts took the time to build some space sentences.  Luckily, our Space Camp can be transformed into a 'space place' for which we used to continue our astronaut training.  Within the space place each astronaut was given a sight word.  This sight word happened to match another astronaut's word, but they needed to find their match by floating (as astronauts would) in the space place.  Once they found their astronaut match, the pair shared a space sentence that included their sight word!

This Week's BUZZ with the Beljung Bells...

Week 10 Highlights:

Welcome to SPACE CAMP!

On Monday the Bells began their astronaut training!  Our journey started as all participants entered the Oak Park Space Camp (classroom) and took an Astronaut Oath.  All astronauts vowed to help their fellow astronauts, listen to all astronaut ideas, learn as much about Earth & beyond as they can, and follow the Mann Space Motto.  To show their commitment to this oath, all astronauts signed the back of their 'Moon & Beyond' folders.

The first day of training also included a journey on Earth.  Using Google Earth we were able to make sense of exactly where we are on our planet.  We explored the United State, Illinois, Oak Park... and even located Mann School!  Did you know the image of our school includes the playground WITH MANN MUSTANGS PLAYING ON IT?!?

And then came DAY 2!  Each astronaut was asked to share their weight on Earth.  These numbers were first written and then compared using greater than >, less than <, or = equal to signs.

On DAY 3 the astronauts observed planet Earth.  We left space camp for the outdoors to look / listen / and draw all that was around us.  We made special note of the daytime sky and even discussed the atmosphere!  The astronauts then showed their compassionate side and designed an Earth for our classroom that emphasizes all the ways to take care of our planet and the people on it!

On DAY 4 we viewed images via NasaKids.gov taken of Earth from space.  The astronauts LOVED learning about the Nardo Ring... a racecar test track in Italy that can be seen from space!

DAY 5 was a day of space rest!  Phew!

Week 4 Highlights:

Doing Our Best with Music and More!

We continued our focus on the many wondrous things we can do with our hands, but with a twist!

This week the Bells explored musicians through a book called 'Jazz Baby', we became sculptors that built clay models, and we transformed ourselves into mathematicians to complete measuring activities in the classroom.

The Bells soon recognized that these kinds of individuals do not try something one time and finish a project.  Instead they make many changes to their projects until it is the best it can be!  To practice this as students, the Bells have been making changes to their own projects and handwriting endeavors to be sure their work is the best it can be and something to be truly proud of!

WE DO OUR BEST!... was this week's theme.  Congratulations to Brody for earning the most horseshoe hoorays for doing his best in our classroom!

Catching Up with Beljung's Boomerangs!

Week 35 Highlights:

Featuring Creatures: Week 2!

This week the Boomerangs continued their animal studies.

MONDAY & TUESDAY became 'Dolphin Day' for the Boomerangs!  They were asked to bring in any dolphin related materials from home to share in our classroom.  These two days allowed us to explore dolphins living in the wild, as well as in captivity.  After viewing a Planet Earth segment, we learned some unique strategies dolphins use to earn their meals... hydroplaning!  Our discoveries also led use to an inspirational dolphin named Winter!

Winter lost her tail at a young age, but thanks to the help of some dedicated scientists and trainers, Winter now has a prosthetic tail.  She lives at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and is doing well.  The Boomerangs loved her story so much, they began playing 'Winter' during  outdoor recess!

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY:  These days were dedicated to chimpanzees and gorillas.  Although we became familiar with these animals in the wild, Koko the gorilla was also introduced to the Boomerangs.  We learned Koko is able to communicate using sign language, so we too learned a few signs :-)  Your Boomerang should be familiar with saying 'hello' and 'animals' using their hands!

Below are pictures of the Boomerangs using the SMARTBoard to make further discoveries about animals and their eating patterns.

As an extension to this week's focus, our class wrapped up a previous activity by measuring the base of the largest recorded sequoia, General Sherman!  At the end of our activity the class was most excited 'get inside the tree' and dance around...

Catching Up with Beljung's Boomerangs!

Week 34 Highlights:

Featuring Creatures!

This week the Boomerangs began exploring Earth's creatures.  We started our journey learning about insects and expanded our studies by brainstorming an alternative animal to investigate each day.

TUESDAY:  The Boomerangs were shocked to learn there are only about 1,600 giant pandas left living in the wild.  Immediately, they became interested to learn about this endangered species!  We discussed the efforts of those working to assist the giant pandas, as well as panda 'fun facts'.  We've been fortunate to get to know Yaoman, Yaoxin, and Shenbin - 3 giant pandas living at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Pandas.  Checking on them each day via a web cam, we have watched the pandas climb trees, eat bamboo, play, and sleep!

THURSDAY:  Our class wore black and white in honor of our giant panda activity, 'Weighing Up to a Panda'!  Each Boomerang made note of their individual weight (even Miss Beljung!) and shared with the class.  With the assistance of calculators our entire class worked together to find the sum of our combined weight = 1,032 lbs!  We were then able to use this number to determine our weight as a class would equal that of 3 PANDAS (@ 300lbs each)!  The class chose to weigh themselves against the heaviest panda ever recorded.

Insect Connection ------>  Thanks to Liam's family the Boomerangs used a microscope to view various insects.  The microscope had capabilities to share facts about each insect, as well as quizzed us on the bug we were investigating!

Week 33 Highlights:

SEEDS & SKYSCRAPERS...  Wrapping It Up!  This week we took time to prepare for our landscaping and skyscraper architecture completion.  We furthered our knowledge of seeds and plants, as well as completed a meter / ruler conversion scale to estimate the height of our (recyclable) skyscraper structures.

WEDNESDAY: Our landscaping architects spent the entire day reading and discussing the process that awaited them following lunch / lunch recess.  Using magnifying glasses the Boomerangs inspected their individual choice of seeds.   From there the seeds were planted, watered, and placed in the sun.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY:  The Boomerangs wrapped-up all planting plans.  Each 'office' table team contributed soil and seeds to our class planter.  Seed choices were chosen and planted by each 'office'.

....And then there were buildings!

Each architect studied their portfolio plans from the past 3 weeks before choosing materials to begin construction.  It seemed easy enough until the Bank of Beljung notified all offices there would be a fee for the initial materials (2 quarters or 50 cents), as well as a fee for each piece of building material thereafter (1 penny or 1 cent).  They were relieved to learn the meter sticks and rulers were complimentary or 'on the house' as they were told.  Phew!

After many hours of planning, designing, and troubleshooting unexpected construction difficulties the skyscrapers were (mostly) complete.  Hard work, tears, low bank accounts and masterpieces were the result...

                                                   VICTORY!

Week 32 Highlights:

And so the Seed & Skyscraper endeavors continue....!

MONDAY: Searching for Sight, Skyscraper, and Seed Words Part II (w/ Plants!)

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY: Part of our small group time was used to create construction paper skyscrapers during the morning, while in the afternoon Boomerangs used an internet based website, 'Tagxedo', to type seed vocabulary and shape them into a plant!

THURSDAY: Our architects completed a math crossword.  To emphasize the importance of measurement and accurateness, each of our classroom 'offices' contained different manipulatives to solve and check the math problems being completed.  Architects were encouraged to visit each office!

FRIDAY: Thank you to our Art Appreciation parents for planning a project around the classroom themes!  Each Boomerang designed a planter container and planted grass seeds!

Students climbed ('ran to the top of') imaginary skyscrapers within the classroom during indoor recess - yikes, and Liam's dad visited the classroom in the afternoon for Mystery Reader!

Catching Up with Beljung's Boomerangs!

Week 31 Highlights:

Although the Boomerangs are continuing their skyscraper explorations, we have also made a connection to plants and seeds!  Understanding the importance of maintaining green initiatives, our class has started the process of examining seeds to plant around our skyscrapers.

MONDAY: Building Skyscraper and Seed Vocabulary

  \

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY: After paying a processing fee (using paper coins), the Boomerangs completed and submitted an application to the 'Bank of Beljung' which included the details for skyscraper construction.  All applications were approved and as a bonus, each Boomerang recieved their Illinois Achitect License.

THURSDAY:  The Boomerang Architects began analyzing different seeds in order to begin narrowing down landscaping options around and within their skyscrapers.  After a second fee was paid to the 'Bank of Beljung', the architects also recieved an approved blueprint to begin skyscraper design.

IN OUR DOWNTIME:  (What?! Downtime?!)  The Boomerangs used recess time to not only explore the inner details of skyscrapers, but also searched for seeds around Mann school to plant in the field!

Catching Up with Beljung's Boomerangs!

Week 30 Highlights:

As part of an extension to our daily studies, the Boomerangs are now exploring SKYSCRAPERS!  We are excited to fit this topic into our weekly activities.  The Boomerangs began their journey by understanding what a skyscraper is, important elements to be taken into consideration when building a skyscraper, and how skyscrapers have changed over the years.

TUESDAY: The Boomerangs each brought to school a water bottle.  As table teams, they created their own 'water bottle skylines'.  Each 'skyscraper' was measured for height and recorded for later reference.

FRIDAY: The Boomerangs exercised their minds and bodies!  After calculating the number of stairs in Mann School, we used a stopwatch to determine how long it would take our class to climb to second and third floors.  Once finished, we took a rest on the stairs to draw a picture of our class completing the activity.

EXTRA FUN:  Some of our architects took their skills to the playground and used woodchips to build a skyscraper skyline during recess  :-)

Thank you to Alexander's mom for being our Mystery Reader!

On Tuesday the Boomerangs ventured into the city for a theatre production of "Seussical"!  This opportunity concluded our month long focus on Dr. Seuss related activities.  Below are pictures of a few lessons completed in class, as well as from after the field trip.  Thank you to the parents who spent the day with us!

"WHAT WAS I SO SCARED OF?"                                                                After reading this story our classd discussed the topic of being scared / afraid.  We used only flashlights, paper, and pencil to complete a journal entry specific to this topic.

"SNOW!"                                                                                Reading "Snow" had come just in time for the snowfall that took place in Oak Park a few weeks ago!  Our class then brainstormed on white paper as many rhyming words for "snow" as they possibly could.  We balled the paper and had our very own snowfall fight in the classroom!  The challenge was to collect "snowballs" and read the rhyming words created by classmates.

Group w/ "Hope on Pop" character.                                                               Group w/ "Yertle the Turtle" character.

1.  Begin with a capital / uppercase letter.

2.  Leave spaces or "nothing" between your words.

3.  End your sentence with punctuation.

Week 17 Highlights:

SUCCESS!  I was able to upload our voice project into the video gallery.  Description is below.  Check it out!

The video was our final step in completing our project on VOICE.  Voice is a trait of writing our class had been discussing for the month of November.  We read stories with strong "voice" or emotion that provoked many whole group discussions.  From those discussions each student chose their own emotion to represent.  They took into consideration the color they "felt" while experiencing their emotion, what they "do" when experiencing their emotion, and connected their emotion to "something".  Students chose 1 of the 3 representations to write, illustrate and video record.

Thank you to Charlie's dad for being our Mystery Reader this week!

Week 6 Highlights:

As a reward for filling our class "Gem Jar", the students voted for a Pajama Party!  In order to fill the Gem Jar, all students need to work together and follow the school rules in their specials classes.  Each time they complete these tasks as a whole group, they receive "gems" in the jar.  After about a week and a half of great behavior, they earned all their gems.  FRIDAY WAS PJ DAY!  As an addition to our day, students also had their first viewing of our class "Mat Man" video.  It is already uploaded in my teacher page gallery.  Check it out!

Week 5 Highlights:

Do you know the 3 elements required to make a shadow?  Beljung's Boomerangs do!  This week we completed an activity in the classroom as part of our Delta Science Shadow Unit.  Students paired up with a classmate, a flashlight and their shadow to complete the lesson.  Using their flashlights, one classmate assisted the other in tracing their peer's hand against a flat surface.  They did a wonderful job and even had the opportunity to make puppet shadows with their hands when finished.  (Thank goodness for a cloudy day and effective window treatments!)

Three Elements to Make a Shadow:

1. Object

2. Flat Surface

3. Light Source

Week 4 Highlights:

Our class had a fantastic week!  Many of our lessons and activities have highlighted this week's sight word, CAN.  After reading the story "Hands Can" our class brainstormed the important tasks their hands complete at school.  Students then took pictures of one another acting out those tasks.  View the video of "Our Hands Can..." in the Gallery.

Week 3 Highlights:

Be sure to check out our "I Am Special" video located in the Gallery.  Each student shared with their class (and Adam the Awesome Ape) a characteristic about themselves.  As an addition to the lesson, they were recorded using an i-Pod Touch.

Students were then allowed the opportunity to begin their journey of using Mann School's i-Pod Touches.  We created a list of 3 important guidelines to keep in mind when using technology.  They include:

1.  Use gentle hands when using technology.

2.  Talk to a teacher if there is an accident with the technology.

3.   Complete only the activity assigned by your teacher.
