Jayhawk Journal - School Newspaper

The Jayhawk Journal at Julian has been a huge success. Almost every student who gets a copy is excited to read it. There is a variety of topics and writing styles in the newspaper, something for everyone. We try to include as much school news as we can in each edition. Articles about school events, school sports, and topics of interest are written. We also include comics and games. One thing we try hard to accomplish is to have a good balance between in-school and out-of-school sports and news. We accept articles from student and teacher writers who want to contribute about a topic relevant to Julian. We have published three issues so far- one issue every two weeks. Around 500 copies of each issue are distributed to students in all teams and grade levels during advisory. The members on the newspaper team are Eva Baker, Lena Tang, Jackson Hassler, David Andolina and Shaun Trock, who are all members of Team 8-3. Each member brings something different to the team. However, many other students contribute to the newspaper and are getting involved. One of our goals is to make the newspaper sustainable. We have collected emails of students in sixth and seventh grade who would be interested in joining a newspaper club. Overall, the Jayhawk Journal has been quite successful at Julian. If your student wants to get involved, please don’t hesitate to have them let us know at [email protected]g.

International Baccalaureate – 8th Grade Community Project

It is that time of year again, 8th grade students are busy setting their Community Projects into motion. Not sure what the IB Community Project is? Here is a little background information. A central part of being an IB student is learning to look at the world through multiple perspectives and appreciate all human experiences similar and different from your own. The community project allows students to apply this type of learning while making positive change within a local or global community. During students' last trimester of Integrated Studies class, they plan and conduct a project that makes a positive change in an area they are passionate about.

This month we will be highlighting different IB Community Projects that are going on in the building.

Grey Eshenroder, Maddox Newmann, and Spencer Brown chose to focus on supporting students dealing with stress. These students believe that there are a lot of kids in the building that are stressed either with things at home or at school. From their research and conversations with their teacher, Ms. Gunnel, they decided to make stress balls for the school social workers to distribute to students. As Grey said, “A lot of people deal with stress. I know personally it would help me to have a stress ball, so I hope it will help others.” The boys made a total of 40 stress balls that were given to our social workers for distribution.

Charlotte Blasi, Elizabeth Cahill, Maddie Sellers, Grace Houren, and Senja Peters teamed up. They coordinated a huge event against gun violence at Scoville Park. Their efforts were highlighted in a recent Wednesday Journal article. Click here for details about this event.

Elizabeth said, “It was really stressful organizing the event but empowering!” She also said an unexpected benefit of their work was becoming friends with people she didn’t really know before starting the project. Charlotte said, “I was really stressed out, but in the end it was amazing to see how many people wanted to make change. Although the bill didn’t pass we are proud that we created this!”

Stay tuned next week for a spotlight on a few other IB Community Projects!

Julian Garden Update

Our students have designed and built an amazing garden space.  Unfortunately, work is stalling due to lack of supplies.  To continue creating this fantastic garden, kids need soil, brown mulch, and tools.

Donations of soil and brown mulch can be dropped off by the 6th grade entrance. We are also accepting new and gently used garden supplies such as weed pullers, trowels, and trellises.  Monetary donations will also be accepted, and can be dropped off in the school office. Please make checks out to Julian PTO with "Garden" in the memo. All contributions are greatly appreciated!

Thank you again for your help, we appreciate it.
