Newsletter for Week of October 26

8th Grade IB Community Project

A central part of being an IB student is learning to look at the world through multiple perspectives and appreciate all human experiences similar and different from your own. This type of learning culminates with the 8th Grade IB Community Project. This week we will be highlighting six student projects that include fundraising as their main goal. They will be participating in the IB Community Project Fundraising Event on Thursday, November 1st during our lunch periods.

The 8th grade students have been publicizing the event around school. We encourage all students to participate in a way that not only gives them an opportunity to support their peers but also engages them in learning about these worthy causes.

Students can bring a minimal amount of money to school on Thursday if they would like to support one of the causes listed below. Donations as small as quarters are welcomed!

The organizations students will be fundraising for include the following:

  • Bee Raw
  • Campaign for Female Education
  • Equality Now
  • Hepzibah
  • Sea Otter Foundation & Trust
  • World Vision

Thank you for encouraging your child to support his/her peers and learn more about the work of these important organizations.

Halloween at Julian Middle School

Students are allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school on Wednesday, October 31.  Please keep the following in mind as your child is selecting a costume for that day:

  • Students may dress as historical figures, but racial/ethnic costumes are not appropriate nor are traditional outfits from different cultures.
  • Costumes may include light make-up (students must be recognizable to teachers and staff), hats, and appropriate fun-related clothing and props.
  • Costumes cannot include such things as gangster attire, masks, and items such as…toy weapons, profanity, gory depictions, fake blood, baby bottles, demonic depictions, or candy pacifiers.

We know that this list is not all-inclusive. We ask families to assist in guiding their child’s choices.

In addition, our rules state that any teacher may request that a student change or alter his/her costume if it is deemed to be inappropriate in the opinion of the staff member. We ask that if a teacher requests removal of part or all of a costume, make-up, or prop, the student involved does so without argument.

If you have any questions about your costume, please ask a teacher or your grade level assistant principal.

Attendance Matters

One of the goals we have as a district is for 90% or more of our students to have 95% attendance or better for the entire school year. Included in this document is information regarding how sick is too sick for school. This may help when you are determining if you should send your student to school or keep them home if they are not feeling well.

Upcoming CAST Performance

CAST invites all JULIAN FAMILIES to a pasta dinner theatre night in the commons on SATURDAY NOVEMBER 10, 2018 before our fall production of ANNIE WARBUCKS (the sequel to the popular musical of ANNIE).  The event, which is organized by Julian parents and generously sponsored by Buona Catering, is a great outing for the Julian community.  The Julian Chorus will also be there to entertain you while you eat.  The dinner is available for a donation to CAST of $15 for each adult, $10 for seniors and students 13 and under and $5 for each cast or chorus member.  Tickets to the production are sold separately.  Annie Warbucks will be presented Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10 at 7:30PM, and on Sunday November 11 at 3:30PM.

Almost 200 students are involved in this fun, family classic, so why not cheer them on and enjoy a family outing at the same time!  Purchase your pasta dinners here and be sure to purchase tickets to ANNIE WARBUCKS separately here.

Picture Retakes

School picture re-takes will be Friday, November 2 at 9:00 AM. Students who were absent on August 31 are on our list to be photographed. Students who do not like their original photo and would like a new picture taken should ask their advisory teacher to add them to the re-take list. These students should turn in their original photo package to the photographer at the time of re-takes.
