Newsletter for Week of March 15

IB Snapshot Introduction:

As you probably know, Julian is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. What does this mean? How does this affect the teaching and learning that happens in our classrooms? We will be using this space throughout the school year to continuously answer these questions by sharing pictures from our classrooms. We hope to show you through pictures of how the teaching and learning at our school are in align with the IB Mission Statement.

IB Snapshot:

Part of the IB Mission Statement, states “encourage students… to become active, compassionate, life-long learners.” One of the ways we do this is by providing a real-world context. For example during 7th grade Humanities, students learn about the Revolutionary War. To make this learning connected to today and our students’ lives, teachers teach the Revolutionary War through the idea of challenging authority. The Revolutionary War, as a whole and in pieces, is looked at through the lens of how individuals and systems challenged authority. At the end of the unit, students use the idea and understanding of challenging authority to analyze the actions of a modern-day activist who is challenging authority.
