Good Books - From Oak Park District 97

PlanetEsme.com - A site maintained by author Esme Codell, author of 2006 Caudill award nominee Sahara Special.

Children's Choices - A"joint project of the International Reading Association (IRA) and The Children's Book Council." These are books recommended by children throughout the US.

Special Lists

Caudill Award - This award is voted upon by the school children in Illinois in grades 4 - 8. Many of the schools in Oak Park participate in the Caudill Award voting. Check with your school's Library Media Specialist to find out if your school participates.

Monarch Award - Now in its second year. Like the Caudill it is voted on by the school children in Illinois, but the voters are from grades K-3. Check with your Library Media Specialist to see if your school will participate.

Reading Olympics - 5th graders from the elementary schools in Oak Park, Roosevelt Middle School in River Forest, and several area private schools are eligible to participate in this competition.

Choosing a Children's Book -From the Chidlren's Book Council. Quck tips on choosing books for children at various age levels.

PlanetEsme.com - a huge site with tips for parents and teachers. Lists, lesson plans, ideas for promoting reading, much more.

Award Books:

Newbery Award Books - Given to the author of the most distinguished American book for children.

Coretta Scott King Award Books - Honors African American authors and illustrators for outstanding contributions to children's and young adult literature.

Pura Belpré Award - Honors an outstanding Latino writer and illustrator whose work celebrates the Latino culture.

Caldecott Award Books -Given to the illustrator of the most distinctive American picture book for children.

State Award Sites - Many states give awards for outstanding books for children. This web site is sponsored by the Carroll County Public Library in Westminster, Maryland.
