As you may know, District 97 has embarked on a two year Middle School Study. The Middle School Study is an effort to review the research as to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs of early adolescents, to review current programming in the middle schools, and to make recommendations for the future. To initiate the Middle School Study, the district has formed the Middle level Oversight Committee (MLOC). This committee is comprised of (from each middle school): the principal, one assistant principal, one 6th grade teacher, one 7th grade teacher, one 8th grade teacher, one elective teacher, one special ed teacher, one SEA representative, one minority parent, and four at large parents. In addition, Dr. Kevin Anderson, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning and Dr. Kelly Baird, Curriculum Coordinator, will also serve on the team. The MLOC will provide direction for the study and review the work of the Action Teams.

The Action Teams will complete the research and make recommendations to the MLOC. Members of the MLOC are also eligible to serve on the Action Teams. Parents/ guardians and community members are welcome to participate in the Action Team process. Each Action Team will be responsible for researching one topic. The topics to be examined include; but are not limited to:

• Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
• Extended Learning Opportunities (i.e. co curricular)
• Technology
• Organizational Structure (teaming, electives, etc.)
• Parent and Community Engagement/ Communication
• More topics can be added by the MLOC

Below is the timeline highlighting important dates.

The first phase of implementation will begin May, 2009.

April 7, 2008 The Middle Level Oversight Committee (MLOC) will meet in the Julian Commons from 5:45 until 7:30.

April 28, 2008 The MLOC and the Action Teams will meet in the Julian Commons from 5:45 until 7:30.

May 2008 - The Action Teams begin their work.

May 19, 2008 - The MLOC and the Action Teams meet in the Julian Commons from 5:45 until 7:30.

June 2008 - Action Teams continue work.

August 2008 - MLOC and Action Teams meet.

September through December 2008 - Action Teams continue work.

January 2009 - Action Teams report to MLOC.

February 2009 - Action Teams review recommendations.

March 2009 - MLOC considers recommendations from Action Teams.

April 2009 - MLOC brings recommendations to the Board of Education.

May 2009 - Board of Education receives recommendations.

May 2009 - Implementation plans begin.
