We want to thank the families and community members who have engaged in what has been a very positive and productive dialogue about the policies and procedures we have in place for governing admission into kindergarten and first grade. Based on the feedback we received and the research we conducted, we have decided not to change our existing practices regarding the age at which students can enter kindergarten. While we recognize that our state and our industry recommend that students begin kindergarten at age 5, we also understand and respect the critical role our families play in determining what is best for the growth and development of their children. That is why we will continue to accommodate requests from families that prefer to have their children enter kindergarten at age 6.
While this aspect of the admission process will not change, we will be reviewing the role our faculty and staff play in determining a child's age-appropriate readiness for kindergarten. We will keep the community updated on the status of these efforts.
Thank you again to everyone who contributed to the conversation about this issue. The passionate commitment you exhibited for the success of all students, especially our youngest learners, reflects Oak Park's strong and steadfast belief in the importance of education.
