Log in to a Mac
If you logged in to the new server last Spring, you already set a new password. Remember, this password consists of at least 6 characters, with one or more numbers.
  1. Type your username OR your full name. The system will recognize you.
  2. Type the new password you set at the end of the school year.
  3. If you didn't log in to the new system last spring, please follow these directions. Login to new server, first time.

Passwords for Staff Members
You will only use your new password to log in to the network and access your personal user folder and desktop.  Groupwise, the Helpdesk and My Home are still running on the old servers so you should continue to use your old passwords to use those programs. Coming soon...The Helpdesk and My Home systems will make a switch and you will soon be able to use your new network password for all three logins. Want to change your Groupwise password to match your new one?
  • To change your Groupwise password, first start the program using your old password. On the GroupWise menu, choose Preferences. Click the Security button in the column on the left side. Select Password at the top of the screen. Click the Change Password button. Type in your current password, then type the new password you’d like to use in both boxes below. Click OK.
  • To change your password through GroupWise WebAccess, log in as usual, then go to Options in the upper right corner of the GroupWise screen. Select the Password tab. Type in your old password, then your new password twice (once in the new password box and again just below to confirm). Click Save.

Passwords & Usernames for Students
Student passwords will continue to be the name of the school mascot; however they may now login with either their short username or their existing username. The short username consists of user's full first name last name in most cases (i.e. samantha parkington) Qe do have some duplicate usernames. Those students' usernames will include a number. Please check the lists that will be distributed to schools prior to the lab opening date of September 17th.

Jump Drive Information

Last Spring, the technology department provided all D97 teachers with a jump drive (sometimes known as a flash or USB drive) with a 512Mb capacity. You should have copied your important files to the jump drive and from there to your new personal user folder.

After the transfer, the jump drive will become your personal storage device.  You can use it to carry files back and forth from home to school, for temporary storage of presentations you want to share with your class, or for any work-related purpose. You are responsible for keeping it safe and your files secure; if the device is lost or damaged, it will not be replaced by the district. The jump drives do come with a lifetime warranty. If it becomes damaged, please contact the company yourself for a replacement. Warranty information is provided in the jump drive package.

What if the server has been switched, but I didn't copy some or all of my files to my jump drive?

Copy Files from Jump Drive to New Personal User Folder

After logging in, you will notice your desktop appears very similar to the one you are used to and you should be able to continue to use your Macintosh computer as you have been doing.

  1. To access your new personal user folder, click on the icon of the house, which is your home folder. You will see many of the same files located in your personal user folder.
  2. Connect your jump drive to the USB port on your computer.
  3. Double click on the jump drive to open the folder.
  4. Drag the files you want to put into your new personal user folder from the jump drive to the documents folder. If you have created your own folders, put those folders into the documents folder. Documents not located within one of the folders you see will be visible to others. If you have movies, music or pictures saved, you can put those into the folders with the same names on the new server. The sites folder will not hold the contents of your teacher web site. Learn more
  5. IMPORTANT: DO NOT move the folders pictured below from your jump drive to your new personal user folder. Copying these files will result in overwriting necessary files and you will experience problems. If you accidentally copied these files to your jump drive, please throw them away.
  6. When you have copied your files, drag the icon of the jump drive to the trash and then remove the device from your machine.

Personal User Folder Storage Limits

Your personal user folder has a storage limit of 1GB.  This is considerably larger than the 250 GB of storage you had last year, and it should be more than enough space for you to save the work related documents you need to access on a regular basis.

You can see how much space any document or folder is taking by clicking its icon once to select it, then choosing Get Info on the File menu, or using the shortcut Apple key + i . To give you an idea about space requirements, here are some typical document sizes:

Type of Document

Amount of Space

1 page Microsoft Word document of all text

28 KB

16 page Word document with multiple graphics

792 KB

1 digital photo (actual space depends on resolution)

616 KB

1 minute of unitedstreaming video

1.8 MB

Please Note: Network storage should be considered as the place to keep documents to which you need daily access, but not necessarily all the documents you have ever created, even if you might use them again at some point.  Documents in the latter category, including larger files such as video and music, should be saved to an alternate storage device, like a flash drive or a CD.

Set Your Browser Start Page

Convert AppleWorks Files to Word
AppleWorks is no longer available on our Macintosh computers; however copies can be found on the PCs in the teacher workrooms at the elementary schools and also in the wing areas in the middle schools. If you brought AppleWorks files to the new server, you will still be able to open some of them in Word, following the directions below; however, the files that don’t translate well may be lost.

Typically, text files make the translation well, but files created using AppleWorks drawing often experience problems during translation.  These files can be saved in .pdf format so they are not lost completely, but to do this you need to open them in AppleWorks which is no longer on your machine.

PDF documents are similar to snapshots and can’t be edited with the available software on our machines.

  1. Click once on an AppleWorks file to select it without opening it.
  2. Drag the file to the icon of Word that appears in your dock.
The document will open in Word with a message on the top that may say Read Only If the formatting has been retained, save it by choosing Save As.
  3. In the dialog box that appears you should see your document name with a .doc at the end. This is the extension for Word. Always leave the extension in the name of the document.
  4. Choose Save. Your document is now in Word format.

The program FileMaker has replaced the AppleWorks function. One or more workshops will be offered this fall for those of you who want to convert your AppleWorks databases to the new format. If you are interested in such a workshop, contact Harla Hutchinson.

Logging in as User/user
If you got into the habit of logging in as user/user, now is the time to break that habit. Logging in this way and using "Go" > "Connect to Server" to access your files will lead you to the old server. You should not save files to the old server, so please be careful. The way to access the new server is to login with your username and password at the startup screen. User/user will remain on our machines, but should be used primarily by guests who do not have a personal login. no user user

Teacher Web
Throughout the summer, teacher web pages have continued to run on our old servers.  It is now time to move them from the old servers to the new servers. We ask you to complete this task by September 7, 2007 in order to allow our building web producers to update the links on their staff contact pages which currently link to sites on the old server. Follow these steps to transfer your web page files.
  1. Log in to the computer using your new password.
  2. Open the sites folder. This is the the folder that will hold your web site on the new server and will replace the public_html folder.
  3. Access your public_html folder, either from your jump drive or from the old server. View directions
  4. OPEN your public_html folder and select all of the contents inside the folder. (apple + a)
  5. Drag the contents of your public_html folder to the sites folder on the new server. Be sure not to drag the actual public_html folder itself to the new server, only drag the contents of the folder.
  6. When asked if you want to repace the index.html file and images, choose yes.
  7. Change the permissions on the document named index.html by following these steps: (see illustration, left)
    • Click on the page named index.html  one time to select it.
    • Hold down the Apple Key and type i to Get Info
    • A screen will appear.
    • Use the drop-down menu to change the permissions to give all staff members rights to view your document. (See arrows below)
  8. Test to see if everything is OK, by typing http://
    insertyourschoolname.op97.org/~insertyourusername
  9. If your home page does not come up, but the district page comes up, move the file named index.html from your old public_html folder one more time and replace the one that is there.
  10. Do not make any changes to the locked files. Your main page is called home.html
  11. From now on, you can update your web site as usual, working in the sites folder on the new server.
