Assistant Director of Special Education

Responsibilities Include:
- Contributes to the development of the total school philosophy of Education.
- Provides input toward the creation and/or the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs.
- Assists the Director in developing policies and programs essential to the needs of children with exceptional needs.
- Keeps informed of all legal requirements governing the delivery of special education services.
- Assists the Director to provide leadership in establishing new programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs.
- Helps to implement survey and child-find programs for continuous identification of children with exceptional needs.
- Supervises and coordinates special education classroom programs that include special classes for students determined to qualify for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Assists the Director in evaluating existing programs as an ongoing responsibility, and recommends changes and additions as needed.
- Provides input into establishing procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment, and reappraisal of students with regard to the special education services program.
- Assists in the development of procedures for referral, securing medical reports, student assessments, and placement.
- Helps with the coordination of home instruction for homebound or hospitalized students.
- Assists in recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special education personnel.
- Assists with gathering data used in compiling, maintaining, and filing reports, records and other documents.
- Assists in maintaining complete and cumulative individual records of all children receiving special education services or enrolled in special education classes.
- Assists the Director with the preparation of attendance reports and similar data necessary for reimbursement of funds, collection of tuition for out-of-district students, and similar fiscal matters.
- Provides input to the Director relative to budget recommendations.
- Keeps informed on the state of financial aid for special education.
- Assists the Director with interpreting and communicating the objectives and programs of district special education services to the Board, the administration, the staff, and the public at-large.
- Assists with the monitoring of a permanent inventory of equipment purchased for special education.
- Provides in-service training for regular education and special education staff relative to special education issues, i.e. compliance, curriculum, classroom management, record keeping, IEP meetings, etc.
- Provides technical assistance to special education staff and regular education staff.
- Assists the Director in evaluating, on an ongoing basis, the total special education program effectiveness, including curriculum procedures, and individual students' needs and achievement.
- Provides input on design, furnishings, equipment, and location of new special education classrooms and facilities.
- Consults with parents of children enrolled in the programs.
- Assists the Director with monitoring students in out-of-district special education placements.
- Coordinates and chairs IEP meetings for selected groups of special education students as determined by the Director. (i.e. three-year reevaluations, transitions, potentially problematic staffings, etc.)
- Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate professional meetings and conventions.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of special education staff development.
- Other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Special Education, the Superintendent of the district and/or the Board of Education.
