Property Inspector

The Property Inspector appears by default at the bottom of your screen and changes by what is selected. If someone else uses your computer and has closed the Property Inspector window, go to Window on the menubar and slide down to Properties. It will appear again.

property inspector for text

Text Property Inspector

First row:

The word Format allows you to change to headings. Do NOT type whole paragraphs in a heading style. Think of a heading in the same terms as you think of a headline in print material.

Default Font: can be changed by using the Arrows. You'll note that there are fewer font's listed than your system contains. That's because these fonts are standard fonts or font families that are on most computers.

Size: allows you to increase/decrease the text, again use the arrows. Use this sparingly. Text must be highlighted to be affected.

The gray box next to the size arrow is for changing text color.

Obvious buttons: B=Bold; I=Italics; Alignment: left/center/right

Second row:

Link: Highlight the words that are to be the link and type the URL in the space OR click the folder to browse within your own site for the file to which the connection is to be made.

Target: In the beginning you'll not use this; it's mostly used when working in frames. One good use however is to have a blank or new window open when you link to a place outside your own site. That way the user closes the link and is still back on your site. Command is _blank. If you hold down the arrows button after Target, that is one of the choices.

Bullet list: starts a bullet list or changes selected text into a bullet list.

Numbered list: starts a numbered list or changes selected text into a numbered list.

Outdent/Indent: The arrows pointing lines out or in create an indent or outdent. These lines are indented. Indent will stay in effect until clicking outdent.

property inspector for images

Image Property Inspector

The image selected apears as a thumbnail, with the size. This is helpful information. Be sure that the "k" is as small as possible. This could be where you use an image editing program to optimize the image. Later when you attempt things like rollovers, you'll want to name the image, so get into the habit of naming each image now! This is not a file name, but a short single word that will identify the image.

W/H of course are the width and height of the image in pixels. Do NOT change the size using DreamWeaver. While it CAN make it smaller, it is better to go to a graphics program to reduce the size. Otherwise the browser not only has to deal with a large memory graphic, but it will also have to calculate the reduced size. This takes time. People don't like to wait!

Src: Source - or where the image actually was when you put it on the page. DO be sure your graphics are within your site folder before adding them to the page.

Link: If you want the image to link to another page or another site, type the URL in the space OR click the folder to browse within your own site for the file to which the connection is to be made.

Align: Most of the time this will be Right or Left with words wrapping around the image. For a bullet type list with an image in front of each item, use Middle. The words will align with the middle of the graphic.

Alt: Alternate text. This is very important - always use it. Type a description of the graphic. Do not just say "picture" or "logo" but describe what it's about. This is read by text readers for the blind. It's also useful for those who have graphics turned off. The description may cause them to load that particular image if it is of interest to them.

property inspector for tables

Table Property Inspector

Table Name: This is not necessary for simple pages, but should be used as your page becomes more complicated or tables are nested within each other.

Rows/Cols: rows and columns increase/decrease amount here.

W/H: width/height of the row / column. Choices are pixels/percent. Use this if you want a specific size.

Cell Pad: The space around the words is thicker.

Cell Space: The space of the cell walls is thicker.

Align: Left, Center, Right alignment on the page.

Border: Default is 1. Zero will make the border invisible. A larger number like 15/20 can create a button like table.

Table Cell Property Inspector

Horz/Vert: The alignment of the text within the cell. Default is horizontal: left and vertical: center. If wishing to change multiple cells, drag mouse over all the cells to change, then select the alignment. They will all be changed at the same time.

W/H: Specific width/height measurement can be specified - in pixels.

No Wrap: Words will NOT wrap within the cells

Header: Table not used for formatting should have a header.

Bg - long space: Cell can have a background image. Type in or click the folder to browse to image location.

Bg - square & short space: Cell can have a background color. Click on gray square to choose color or type in color name or #.

Brdr: Table border can be different from cell border. Click on gray square to choose color or type in color name or #.
