Positive Learning Environment at Julian Middle School

Julian Middle School is in the process of implementing the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program. PBIS emphasizes focusing on a school wide system of support that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a positive school environment. Instead of using a piecemeal approach of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings (such as hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, etc). Positive behavior support is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs.

As a means of supporting the effective implementation of this program, a PBIS Coordinator has recently been hired to support both Brooks and Julian throughout this process.  We are striving to provide all students with a positive learning environment. Click here to learn more about PBIS.

Cross Country-State Competition

The cross-country team competed in the IESA State Championship last Saturday. We had 4 runners that qualified for this race:

  • 6th Graders-Lenny Sterritt and Garrett Lundgren
  • 7th Grader-Liam Newhart
  • 8th Grader-Samantha Duwe

Hats off to Lenny Sterritt for qualifying for the State Competition in her first season at Julian. Liam Newhart ran one of his fastest races of the season with a time of 11:26. Special recognition goes out to Samantha Duwe and Garrett Lundgren: both runners finished in 18th place overall, received a medal and an "All State" distinction. Garrett Lundgren was the only 6th grade boy to finish in the top 25.

Overall, it was a great season. Congratulations to all of our cross-country team members as well as our coaches: Ms. Tysse, Mr. Williamson, and Mr. Taylor.
