End of Trimester Grade Level Celebrations – Positive Learning Environment

On Monday, November 27 each grade level had end of the trimester assemblies to recognize our students and celebrate the great things happening at Julian Middle School.  Each assembly was emceed by a different teacher and featured a variety of groups that were recognized. The CAST Choir kicked things off by performing a song from “Big River”. The following groups of students were acknowledged by coming up on the stage of the auditorium. Many groups also showed short videos highlighting different aspects of their sport, club, or activity. Best Buddies, Ultimate Frisbee, Special Olympics, Cross Country, Girls Volleyball, Rainbow Tribe, and Girls Basketball were acknowledged. The Spoken Word club was also recognized and had a handful of students perform for their peers. It was a great start in regards to having end of trimester grade level celebrations to celebrate our students.  We will continue to have these throughout the school year and will be seeking feedback from the students to determine how to make the next celebration even better.

Augmented Reality at Julian Middle School

This week several Julian teachers participated in Google’s Pioneer Program for Expeditions AR. Miranda Tucker and Patrick Mucha (8th grade science), Edd Magierski and Joe Anderson (fine arts), and Chris Meglan (multi-needs) jumped on an opportunity to participate in this one-day beta program exploration of 3D augmented reality objects. With technology provided by Google, Science students examined objects from the solar system while art students experienced renderings of Leonardo DaVinci’s inventions and drawings. These objects supplemented the teachers’ lesson plans to help students observe and question in innovative ways.

These teachers, as well as others, are continuing to work with Jamie Winchell (media center specialist) and Brook Bolanos (instructional coach) on how we can leverage mixed reality to empower students as creators of this technology and not just consumers.
