Dear Hatch Families,

This year our Student Council will be working with the theme “It’s Your World”, based on the Chelsea Clinton book of the same name. We’ll be spending a few minutes in each Student Council meeting teaching the reps about things going on in the world based on the four sections of the book- poverty, education, health, and environment/ endangered species. Then they will pass this information back to their classmates in the form of short PSA announcements.

We’re creating an all-school bulletin board project (across from the main office) where kids are posting stickers telling what they can/will do to impact the world. Please check out the wonderful ideas that our students are naming for themselves. #itsyourworld

This week, our amazing library media specialist, Ms. Howe, unexpectedly needed a medical procedure. The procedure was successful, and she is already recovering. However she will need to rest for a bit before returning to work. Ms. Endres, who subbed for Ms. Howe’s maternity leave, will be helping in the library for the next few weeks while we await Ms. Howe’s return. If you have any questions regarding our library, please feel free to email her at [email protected].

We have a some reports of lice in the past couple days. Lice are present in any community where there are children. It should be assumed that there are always lice where children spend their time including sporting activities, group play activities, and schools. The best way to control the spread of lice is with early detection. Lice experts recommended that parents check their child's hair daily to several times per week. Ongoing surveillance is needed so that early treatment can be provided. The best places to check your child are at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Nits look like tiny white flakes that don't move off of the hair shaft. You have to literally pull the nit off the length of the hair to remove it. Nits are laid at the base of the scalp and must grow out in order to be visible. Live bugs look like tiny black dots that crawl very quickly.

If you detect lice, please consider contacting the school. Confidentiality will always be maintained. We appreciate your attention to this matter!

In order to ensure the safety of our students, we are asking parents who drive their children to please drive slowly and carefully when near school grounds. Please do NOT double park nor block the street nor driveways during drop off/pick up. Whenever possible please opt to walk your student to and from school. Let’s all work together to keep our students safe!

New - Food Allergy chairperson for the PTO: Attention parents of children with food allergies, the PTO is looking for a volunteer to be Food Allergy Chairperson. This person should have current knowledge of food allergens. We are looking for someone to serve as a resource for PTO-sponsored after-hours events that involve food such as Taste of Hatch Patch, Movie Matinee, Halloween Disco, and Fun Fair. The goal is for this person to work with the chairs or committees for each event so that an appropriate option for kids with food allergies is provided and that the events feel safe and inclusive to all. This could include ensuring there is a packaged snack offering that is allergy-friendly and providing ingredient lists for prepared foods. This is a new role and the volunteer who takes it on will be able to help shape it for the future. Please email Beth at [email protected] if interested.
