Dear Hatch Families,
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, please take a moment to express to your child’s teacher something they may have done for your child that you are grateful for. Maybe they have put a great deal of thought into how to push or support your child academically. Maybe they gave your child a hug or a smile when they needed reassurance. There are countless ways I see our teachers caring for our children without even realizing it. It is part of what makes our school such a special place! I personally am grateful to be a part of such a unique and caring community where putting children first is a daily reality. I am thankful for every child, parent, and staff member who makes that reality possible!
Our third, fourth and fifth graders are looking forward to our annual Turkey Trot next Monday afternoon. Students will head outside for a fun run followed by hot cider and prizes. Thanks to our many volunteers for making this event so much fun!
This week during PE, East Ave Lacrosse, an Oak Park and River Forest-based community program, visited Hatch, to work with our students during their physical education classes. Their staff of coaches introduced our students to one of the fastest growing sports in the country, with engaging programs that are appropriate for students of all ages, sizes, and abilities. Be sure to ask your student what they learned!
A gentleman in the Chicago area named Lester Trilla is a very big supporter of the Hatch Steel Band, and he is sponsoring a trip for the steel band kids to visit Northern Illinois University to see their fall steel band concert this Sunday, November 19th. Northern Illinois University has one of the largest and best collegiate steel band programs in the world. Students will get to work with the professors at NIU in a masterclass, and also attend the concert. Don't miss the Hatch Steel Band winter concert on Tuesday, December 12th at 6pm in the Hatch auditorium!
Each year the D97 schools partner with Oak Park Education Foundation to provide enrichment opportunities to all learners. The OPEF “Year at a Glance” for Hatch is attached.
Please see the attached letter that was sent by our D97 Teaching & Learning Department regarding changes to the 2017-18 report card. We will be providing a learning opportunity for parents on both classroom assessments and report card changes at our next PTO meeting on Tuesday November 28th in the library. We hope to see you there!

PTO Reminders
The Hatch Turkey Trot is RESCHEDULED for MONDAY
In order to enjoy better weather, Mr. Cruz has rescheduled the Turkey Trot Run for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders is moved to MONDAY, November 20. And the event will take place around Hatch, not at Taylor Park. We need all parent volunteers to re-check the siand we still need additional help on Monday at Noon.
In our Turkey Trot tradition, kids be served cinnamon apple cider after their trot. If parents do not wish their child to have cider, please notify your child’s homeroom teacher.

Help bring back the Math-A-Thon lunchtime program
Our mission is to have fun with Math by building an important skill of problem solving
We need additional parents to help supervise students doing math packets in the Math-A-thon lunchtime program on Mondays (K-1st graders), Thursdays (2-3rd Grade) or Fridays (4th and 5th graders). The Hatch PTO Hatch Patch is named 2017 Green Award winner by the Village of Oak Park Environment & Energy Commission
The Green Award program was established to recognize residents and other individuals for their efforts in promoting environmental initiatives and improving the quality of life for residents within the Village of Oak Park. Each year the Environment and & Energy Commissioners review nominations sent to the Commission by their fellow residents and selects individuals or groups they feel have made a significant impact within the last year. Congratulations to the entire Hatch Patch team led by master gardener and Hatch parent Heather Guido!! Also thanks to the Hatch Green Team for their support of the Hatch Patch. Their award will be handed out at a special village event in December.
Our next PTO meeting is November 28, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving break. All parents and guardians are welcome! Ms. Mendez will be explaining the new report card formats before report cards come home in December. And you'll hear updates on other Hatch events. Free childcare is provided. The meeting runs from 7-8 p.m.

District 97 Community Café Series hosted by Superintendent Carol Kelley
Next two coffees are November 29, 7:00-8:00 a.m. at Addis Cafe and December 9, 9:00-10:00 a.m. at Live Cafe. There will be no set agendas or presentations. Instead, this will be an opportunity to engage in an informal conversation about what is happening in District 97’s schools and the Oak Park community as a whole. We’d love to have a few Hatch parents attend.
