We had a fabulous author visit on Tuesday! Lauren Tarshis of the amazing “I Survived” series visited our 3-5th graders at Hatch. She shared how she uses non-fiction text for research to write her historical fiction series, and then answered the student's questions and autographed her books. Thank you, Ms. Howe for bringing this experience to our young authors!

The Hatch Steel Band has a new music video, and there are a few more to come as well!  This one is pretty funny and the kids are really in their element! Check it out!

The 4th Annual Spring Arts Fiesta is next week! Please mark your calendars for the 1st-3rd grade show on Wednesday, May 9th and the 4th -5th grade show on Thursday, May 10th.  Both shows begin at 5:30pm. Please note all K-5th students will have an artwork in the gallery available for $20 cash or check purchase and all 1st-5th grade students will participate in the music and language performances. There is no obligation to buy student artwork.

We have a Hatch family in great need right now.  They have been living in the Oak Park shelters for the past couple months, but these shelters close on May 13th.  We would like to raise some money to cover at least one month at the Carleton hotel (and possible some groceries!) so the student can finish out the school year.  We have created a gofundme page to collect money. Anything at all would be greatly appreciated.Thank you so much!

WATERING THE HATCH PATCH We ask for a different family to sign up to water the Hatch Patch each week over the summer. It's easy and doesn't take much time. We have a sprinkler on a timer and there is a YouTube video that explains how to do it!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEYEWaFRQp4&t=28s. (We are planning to plant 3 Paw Paw trees that may require some extra watering to keep alive through summer.) http://signup.com/go/SnECGpN

SUMMER TUESDAY NIGHTS IN THE HATCH PATCH  6:30 p.m. all Summer. Every Tuesday night, starting May 29, from 6:30 til 7:30, all families are invited to join in at the Hatch Patch to help maintain the garden and harvest produce for donation to the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry. It's a great time for kids to connect with classmates. Some evenings we have special tastings - in the past we've made a cheese with Hatch grown chives, chocolate chip cookies made with Hatch lavender, pesto pasta made with Hatch basil, and of course fresh beans and tomatoes or whatever else is growing for the tasting. Kids who come can take home a sample to try at home. No sign up required! Just show up and join in the fun! We harvest the orchard (pears, peaches, plums, cherries) all summer long, too!

HATCH PATCH GARDEN LEADERS AND VOLUNTEERS

We are always looking for more parents to join us. We'd love to have more kindergarten and first grade families join with us to keep the garden going strong into the next generation of students coming to Hatch. Summer is the best time to get involved. If you enjoy nature, light gardening, garden art, cooking, making preserves, nature photography, or any other garden-related activity - we have a place for you! Contact the garden team: Heather Guido, Raquel Wells, or Beth Sauers if you have any questions. Heather's email: [email protected].
